Thinking of getting this, should probably post in the Photography forum, but you people might know...

    1) Are these camera's any good for general use?
    2) I presume it uses SD card for expansion? (Doesn't say on the website)

    Cheers folks

I got one there a few years ago and was very disappointed by it.

Poor build quality, battery life is poor and general picture quality is awful.

    180 is not that cheap
lots of cameras on pixmania for that price and even less

you dont need 7mp, as low as 4 or 5 is fine-you will not notice any difference
    try get better optical zoom
or try get better/internal rechargable battery like moblie phone battery(lithium)

    www.pixmania.ie

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/356535/art/pentax/optio-m20.html
only €100 and spec is similar to lidl

    On the LIDL homepage, http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/i.home
it says this is a "Sony 7 megapixel CCD" digital camera.

However, it also says it comes with an SD memory card (where as Sony's come with Sony Memory Stick).

And it doesn't say anything more about it being a Sony here http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070503.p.7MegapixelDigitalCamera

    I'm guessing isn't not actually a Sony....

    Can anyone clarify this?

It also says it has a Pentax lens, Sony normally use Carl Zeiss...

The CCD is Sony- CCD being the "Charged Couple Device" which actually captures the images as they hit them. Its only one of the components that make up the digital camera- though an important one.

In all honesty- do not touch that camera with a bargepole. You'll pick up a nice one with 4x optical zoom and reasonable lense quality for a lot less (as mentioned above).

Digital zoom that this camera mentions, reduces the resolution of the picture being taken- always go for optical zoom.

Noel - Just ordered that from Pixmania. I'm guessing its not the most compact around, but TBH I don't care, I want good quality images. What's the shutter speed like?

The GF may not be too impressed that it's not ultra-compact. I feel this is a bit of a Simpsons moment when Homer bought Marge a bowling ball with the name 'Homer' enscribed on it ;)

Guys, how are you finding battery life? Mine is pretty awful. Bundled non-rechargeables lasted a day. Was only getting used to the camera, changing settings, and taking a few snaps. Charged up the bundled rechargeable but they were drained by the next day.

Good stuff,OK not ultra compact but its 'footprint' (length/height)wouldn't be much bigger than a 20 pack of cigs.

Here's a good article about it:

And don't laugh but here's a pic of yours truly taken on Inishbofin with its predecessor a510

Noel, read a few reviews about it, seems to be decent for the price.. Just wanted to get some 'real' feedback.

As you said, if she don't like it i'll happily take it off her hands :D

    Cool pic BTW

Emmm cant really comment as the bundled batteries went missing in a drunken haze during Liverpool winning the champions league semi final :D

Since then Ive been kinda juggling batteries into it from various things around the house. What your saying is a bit worrying though. Although there was one negative comment on the pixmania ordering page about battery life, but the dude said something like he had to change the batteries once a year so I didnt really pay much attention.
