Travelling Storage

I’m travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam this summer for two months, and of course bringing my 350D. Only going to bring one lens [28-135 IS], should give me the most flexibility without having to worry about carting numerous lenses.

On the storage side, I currently have a 2GB and 4GB cards. I am planning to order two more 4GB cards today or tomorrow and a small card reader. I think this should be enough. I can delete any real crap as I go along and just keep any with potential.

Can anybody recommend cheaper 3rd party batteries for my canon 350d?
Any comments or advice on my plan?

    Thanks.

Thinking of doing something similar myself except doing the trans siberian railway thing.. Currently want to upgrade my camera from Sony H2 to hopefully Nikon D50 or Canon. I really dont want to travel all that way and to be let down by the camera not being able to support the pictures I want to take.. Storage was also something I was wondering about so I will watch this thread with interest!

look at getting a nextodi cf ultra if you want some more storage...i would definitely not trust just the CF cards. May not be necessary if you are bringing a laptop with you. Not sure on 3rd part batteries, should be no problem just be careful getting batteries or cards on ebay - they are rarely genuine unless you buy from someone you deal with regularly...

I did 5 months in Asia, I had my laptop with me, but while I was in bangkok I bought an 80GB Lacie self-powered external HDD. Best thing I bought on the trip, kept a copy of the photos on the laptop and the HDD and even posted home a few DVDs of the good stuff.

Internet cafes are plentiful, so the HDD maybe over kill, but just make sure you back everything up.

Yeah sorry, I should have been clearer. The card reader is to back up the photos on dvd's.

Rabbit: Did you have any trouble charging your batteries? Power ratings and teh like?

You can get batteries here that are cheap enough to buy a few of them! I haven't used them myself so I'm not sure what the quality is like but for €10 they're probably worth a try..

No problems at all. Some areas dont have mains power and run on generators, these can be dodgy (sparks flying) but I had No problems.

The main thing I would advise is Silica Gel for moisture. and watch out for insects, I turned on my laptop one day and about 30 ants crawled out of it? Freaked me right out.

There are net cafes everywhere, you can back up everything and its dirt cheap.

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone used an iPod or some other MP3 player for backup?

I know that the iPod supports Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) but I dont think its compatible with my camera. Does anyone know of a half decent MP3 player that supports PTP?

Bought a Vosonic 40GB a couple of years ago about € 100. Use it extensively when I travel, great piece of kit. It's about the size of a mobile phone.

Batteries are cheap and work fine from 7dayshop.com in Jersey.

I got one of these a few months back. They are a little on the slow side, but no complaints so far. I also had a Nexto Di and it worked only once. It was faster the time it did work though :)

The Creative 60GB Vision M mp3 player supports that function. It has a host usb port so you can d/l straight from your camera/card reader to the player.

I think some of the Archos players are the same.

Anyone uses a mobile 2.5'' enclosure like this?
Was thinking of buying one and adding a harddrive to it.
Anyone has experience with reliability and how robust they are?

I got an Epson P3000, 40gb and 4" screen. I have used Hanhel batteries on my 350D and they work out around the same life as the original. I you have a battery pack you can put 2 in it.
