Advertising - if youre ugly, youre ugly

How do I start this off - while looking at a website for women and their beauty section, I kinda got p*ssed off with all their nonsense and lies.

Am female and I accept the way I look. Would regard myself as just a normal, nothing special looking girl. I do/did fall for the advertisement jargon "no wrinkles etc"....

I guess what I am trying to say is that they make a fortune off women who think there is something wrong with them. Sorry it just hit me there when I saw an amazonian type chic trying to sell a product....

In a nut shell, if you are ugly or plain, you'll always be ugly or plain, but there is more to life then buying a jar of cream which makes you think you'll turn into that amazonian model.

Are we all this superficial? Is it all about the money? Should certain types of advertising be banned or how they advertise?

The question is, are you worth it?

I don't agree, a lot of plain girls look stunning when they make the effort. A nice hair style, possible some hair coluring, and putting on some nice clothes can make a world of difference. All this fake tan lark is for the birds though, if you're white, you're white, don't bother with fake tan or you'll just look like an umpa lumpa.

    Yeah

Yes, sometimes. But most advertising is a form of manipulation, so manipulative advertsing can't be banned in itself. What is needed most is people to arrive at the same conclusions as you did. :)

I could supply you with some alternative cream.;)

Anyone who says that models in advertisments are photoshoped to be made better looking is deluded. Truth is that Irish women are just ugly (apart from the ones in ads of course). Not only should they focus on getting more of the so few better looking women on to their billboards, but they should impose a blanket ban on fat chicks and ugly birds working in the advertisment industry.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is?

Advertisments are designed to hook some little part of your soul that you can't deny and the pull, pull hard. Clearly whatever marketing deity has done the numbers figures that the bulk of their female target market are superficial (to at least some extent), and so they obviously lash up a bevy of savage looking ladies to insinuate the notion that "our products will make you look like this..."

I suppose you could argue there's a definite social commentary on the female gender in there, you certainly don't see the same type, or amount of advertising directed at males. But why get al hot and bothered about it?

We all set the tone for ourselves. If some bright spark in advertising picked up on the vane aspects of people's personalities, well all they did was capitalise on something that was already there, so don't shoot the messenger.

not so good looking people tend to know that they are not so good looking and they just accept it and get on with life

i find it is good looking girls or stunning girls that are the ones who really get sucked in i dont know if it is because they want to get better looking or they dont want to lose what they have but it is definitley better looking people who are vain and the ads aim for their vanity

Not strictly true, if it was, we wouldnt have Extreme Makeover.

    Or maybe the products work!!!*

Id dont have a problem with beauty ads as such, we are worth it after all ;) just the ones for creams with pento-peptide-antigravity-superduper stuff in them. If those creams really could make you look 20 years younger, penetrate your skin and rejuvenate it or whatever, let them test them and class them as medicines or ban the ads, which are pretty much lies.

    *Im joking. Really.

i didnt mean everyone just in general...i also believe the majority of the "problems" the people on those shows have with themselves are nothing a good dose of councilling couldnt get them over and then mild plastic surgeory not the extreme surgeory that gives the show its name although they can be entertaining to watch

the advertising industry is all about selling you things you dont need and manipulating your insecurities to do it . unfortunetly women are much more insecure than men which is why cosmetics for girls is bigger than the irish beef industry in terms of turnover and no where near that for men (though they are doing their damndest to change that )

this may amaze people whove read stuff ive posted about irish girls before but i honestly dont think ive ever met an ugly woman. they may not know how to portray themselves or wear unflatering clothes or been sexually unattractive to me but ive never seen a woman made me think "sweet jebus protect me!!" . maybe its the artist side of me but ive always associated beauty with character and while ive met loads of girls who've been repulsive to me its almost always to do with their personality. like wise "plain girls" can become far more attractive the more you get to know them.

just do yourself a favour and forget them. for gods sake some of the stuff theyre selling now has urea in it "for smother younger skin!". thats the main ingredient in piss! :D

Advertising makes me want to punch babies, the amount of it around dublin is disgusting..you cant take a slash without some c**t trying to sell you something. I bet the toerag who came up with the idea of sticking ads on the phone while you're on hold for an hour waiting some customer service muppet to answer got a enormous bonus. i hope he dies f***ng roaring, preferably while on hold

corporate sponsorship adverts are the worst "we're with the team each step of the way" and such bollox, or "be there" or "believe" with a picture of some dozy f****r roaring at a rugby match on the telly.

    Lordy, how i hate advertising.

That is so wrong. All Irish women are not ugly, some Irish women are stunning, some are average in the looks stakes and some are dreadful...............and this is the same for Italian/French/English/Belgian/German/American/Russian etc etc men and women. I hate it when people pass off a comment that all Irish women are fat, ugly, standoffish, materialistic, spoiled etc etc its total bulls1t.
Anyone who believes that the people in adverts have not been transformed into the way they look on tv by a host of make up artists, hairdressers, stylists, good lighting and airbrushing deserves to be out the money they spend on those products in the belief that by using L'Oreal they too will turn into Eva Longoria/Claudia Schiffer/ whatever other famous women is the flavor of the month.

Some of the stuff works, some doesn't. You have to be critical, though.

Most if not all anti-wrinkle stuff, for example, is complete rubbish. If those creams did what they claim to, they would have to be sold as medicines. Usually, if you look at the smallprint, they say their claims are based on the impressions of a sample group of people. So it's based on perceptions, not on any objective test.

binomate photoshop is a fact and there are hundreds of people in the industry making money because the models are photoshopped you are the deluded one if you think its does not happen

i tend to agree that the irish is a race of fat ugly people but i dont mean to say that every irish person is fat an ugly but compared to eastern europeans say our genetic makeup is one of fat and ugliness.............i personally(and i think its been said here before) believe its becuase our population is so small that we are all inbred to a certain extent whereas countries with much much larger populations have a much wider gene pool to "select" from

actually racist as that sounds theres a kurnel of truth in it. its the famine, all those fast metabolism types died out where as all those who put on weight survived. survival of the fittest really. its also why we have a 50% higher incidence of cystic fibrosis than everywhere else in europe.
and a lower population does mean we all do look alike so the sooner we hook up with immegrants the better !

thats a much better way of explaining it even though i dont think my way was the slight bit racist
