    hi all

I recently shot a couple of hundred images in westport in RAW.I also had some jpegs on the card. When i got home and plugged the camers into the computer the only thing uploaded was the jpegs. My computer does not recognize the RAW images. I use a canon 30d (still learning this digital racket:rolleyes: ).

    Can anybody offer any advice?

    If you're using Windows try

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Download the 'RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer' it should let you see them anyway.

If you're going to use a lot of RAW you might need to get GIMP or Photoshop to process them

What software are you using? You probably need to get the latest RAW updater for your software to be able to read the RAW files. When I got my D200 last year it couldn't read the RAW files either.
It's a case of the camera being more up to date than the software your using. Each camera has a different type of RAW file. I use Photoshop CS2 and all I had to do was go onto the Adobe site, look for the appropriate CAMERA RAW updater and download it to your computer. All you do then is follow the instructions on the Adobe site to replace the current Adobe Camera updater and you should be able to see your RAW files.

    Pete.

I've a 20D and always shoot in raw.

You just need to have the right software to copy the images from the camera card and then to edit the files.

You can always use Windows Explorer to copy the files from the camera/card on to your PC, but you'll still need some editor to edit the files and convert them to tiff or jpg.

I've also seen this happening when using the camera plugged in to the PC instead of using a card reader, because it happened to me when I shot raw+jpg even though I've been using raw alone for months now, with all the appropriate plugins installed...

Dont you get the appropriate software with the camera ? You should have a CD with Digital photo professional , EOS viewer utility , Canon Wia drivers , EOS capture utility , and photostitch software ,

The EOS viewer Utility and Digital photo professional will recognise the RAW files.
And Canon Codecs for raw files can be downloaded off their site ,

    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct

Just put in your details and all the latest software will be available for download.

Once these are installed You can associate CR2 with the required program in "file options" menu and they will always be recognised after that.

Also , I dont know about a 30D , but on the 20D there is a problem with recognising and editing raws while they are still in the camera ( connected by USB cable with the card still in the camera that is ) , you have to copy them to the PC first , a card reader has no such problems however , and they are cheap enough.

Downloading and having the RAW Image thumbnail/viewer that Crowdedhouse mentioned is a great way for checking out the images using windows explorer.

It also means you dont have to keep opening Lightroom, Aperture, PS etc just to view the images.

Yep that worked. my pc crashed a few weeks ago and i only realized after your post that i had not reinstalled my camera software:eek: . For anyone with a similar problem I used a card reader and batch processed the images with digital photo pro and then they were simple enough to transfer to a folder. Just on a footnote I am at best a keen amatuer is there any need for me to shoot in raw?

    p.s
thanks for all the help guys

For anyone, there's no need to shoot in raw.

I'm only an amateur myself, but I enjoy the control you have with the raw image. It just gives you more scope to work with the image.
