Hey guys, not sure if this belongs in broadband or here, (please move as appropriate). I'm not too savvy on this so forgive my ignorance, but is there a connector / reader that I can buy to connect a three (3) / vodafone DataCard to a desktop ?

I cannot get Broadband wireless or adsl so it may be a red herring in this case anyway, just thought there maybe a feint hope that if i bought a three card I'd get somekind of broadband at home, but wanna buy a desktop...

    Cheers

    FBP.

    Smashing!

    Thanks

One q tho, is it worth doing if I can't get wireless? (no line 'o sight). Will it be any slower than dial-up ???

    Thanks Again,

    FBP

You could also consider the Vodafone "Bornfree" option. It's a pocket sized USB Modem (3G) & it plugs directly into any USB port.

    Thanks for that.

I'm more interested with Three tho as they appear to have at least the possibility of coverage where I live, vodoafone, going by the map doesnt....

    Great gadget tho...

    Thanks Again..

in theory the 3g signal is faster then dialup by a fair bit, but i have not used this at all, and dont know anyone that has it. Give 3 a ring, they shoudl be abale to answer all of your questions.

just a note , the 3g data cards can work out expensive, i've seen them boost as high as €500-600 a month for normal internet use (email, im browsing)

whereas i believe the vodafone usb fella is all inclusive?

no its not it has a 5 GB limit, costs €10 more per month and is slower.

3's data card limit is 3GB and it costs 49c a MB after that. that's a lot of email browsing to get up to €600 a month.
@op, you can get an adapter for the pcmcia card in maplin if you don't want to buy it on the net. and if you're worried about coverage, you can bring it back within two weeks if you don't think its fast enough

    :D

    Thanks

    Was onto Three...

Convinced the CallCentre is in India !!! least not in Ireland... I live in a village, chap kept saying "there is not HDSP in you city sir"....

so, i degrade to 2.5G if not on 3.. and 2 if not on 2.5.. coverage map suggests differently... still, would 2.5 be ok ?

Thanks for the maplin tip.... will probably do it with the 14 days job...

    appreciate yer time guys..

2.5 would be fairly slow but their coverage map is very out of date so the only way to be sure is the 14 day jobbie

coming from the premise of NO internet and kids beating me up over it ;) , would 2.5G be slower than dial-up ? Even if its twice as quick it would be worth considerin...

    thanks again.

having had a look on wikipedia of all things, gprs only runs at about 80kbps compared to dial up's 56k. not much improvement tbh
