3rd Person Shooters on Wii

    Are there any?

I'm in a team working on a game design for uni at the moment and basically certain aspects of gameplay mean a third person camera is absolutely necessary.

However, the game also involves shooting and using the pointer to shoot means you can click behind yourself which doesn't make much sense.

We've considered a couple of approaches, basically either direct mapping(get the character to stretch his arm sideways or point the gun behind him if that's where you point or indirect mapping, which would be more like what you'd get with a right analogue stick and would always point in front of the player.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any examples already out there and how they work? I can't think of any, but with all the minigame compilations on Wii there's got to be something.

Resident Evil 4 is coming out of the Wii shortly. I'm sure you can get some screenshots or footage.

I think scarface and the godfather are games you might be looking for.

the way resident evil works is you have to hold down a button when you want to shoot. this zooms the screen in over the players right sholder so the shooting parts become more or less 1st person (ie you can shoot behind you)

if you dont want to do this then just dont allow the pointer to go behind the players feet on the ground. create an invisible line parallel with the bottom of the screen running along where the players feet are. this is the line that stops the pointer. so if the user points behind the players feet (so behind the player) then the gun will just shoot straight down.

i hope this makes sence. it does in my head. PM me if not

Keep the camera close to the player character and just don't allow the player shoot at ridiculous angles like if there is an enemy behind you. If you get the characters head to follow his aim then it won't look as stupid. You could get him to shoot over his back like Ash in Evil Dead 3 when he shot the witch with his shotgun :)

I suggest you take a look at Panzer Dragoon Orta which is 3rd person but has a character shooting in 360 degrees including behind her. The animation is superb and doesn't look silly at all. It might help.
However just keeping the camera close will limit enemies getting between the camera and the player character.

Cheers that's really close to the sort of gameplay we have in mind and you just reminded me I always meant to pick that game up anyway now that they've added it to the 360 compatibility list. In the name of research ;)
