I believe the lens you posted a link to is the film version and from the review it looks like a Canon mount , you need a Nikon mount , they are quite different , that lens you linked is also the " Older " ( film ) version ,

With the old type the crop factor on the D40 makes it a 42mm - 202mm and while this is nice on the long end it ruins the wide end for landscapes and stuff.

this is the " newer " digital version if you like ,

( can be got cheaper than this .... just an example )

The difference in focal length is meant to make up for the crop factor on the nikon , which is 1.5 , so that would bring the new 18 -125 up to 27 - 188 mm in film terms ( more in line with the focal length in your link and fine for wide angles etc.),

Basically , Sigma make all their lenses in both Canon and Nikon mounts , as long as you get the Nikon mount it will work.

I had the older 28-135 Sigma with Macro and when I went digital I found it to be nowhere wide enough to what I wanted or was used to. I also found the older version (for film) to be soft on digital, especially at the longer focal lengths, although the macro seems reasonably sharp on the lens. Head into a few shops and try out that specific lens with the D40 to see how they work together. You can't beat a 1st hand test!
My opinion would be to avoid the 28-135 for digital purposes and go with something like the lens mathias suggested although its not macro capable.

    Pete.
