Pop up window on form?

I've googled but cant find exactly what im looking for, im looking to throw up a window when a users clicks on the submit button of a form if they left out a certain field! All i've found on google is to put data into a pop up window which is not really any help! Anyone have any ideas?

you need to use <form action="on.submit(checkform_function)">

you can also have a look into checking form using Ajax.
