J1 Two Year Residency Rule

I'm a postgraduate student and I've managed to organize an internship in Boston from July for 5 months, which is great as my girlfriend is American and she lives nearby.

I have to go through this other company called CDS (http://www.cdsintl.org/) who will issue me with a DS-2019 which I then use to get a visa with the US Embassy. CDS have a whole program in place, I have to do orientation with them, I have to write reports etc. Basically, it seems as if this company are baby-sitting me and making sure I don't go AWOL. I'm not sure if this is normal.

However, my main concern is "Two Year Residency Rule". It basically says that after the J1 I could be restricted from working in the US for 2 years after I finish the J1 - which is total pants. I was hoping to get a post-doc in the US after the internship finishes but that is out of the question if the restriction is applied to me, and the aforementioned girlfriend won't be too happy either!

Can anyone shed any light on this restriction? Does anyone have experience of this? And can anyone suggest how one might avoid it?

    Cheers

Two year rule doesn't generally apply to Ireland. I have friends from Ukraine and Georgia who have to abide by it after their J1, I don't.

And as the company is sponsoring you they are responsible....so that's why they want to keep an eye on you.
