To Wii or not to Wii . . .

I was a huge console fan when I was younger. Nintendo all the way. I spat on those pesky Sega users! (little bit OTT!) I had the lot up to and including the Super Nintendo. Then I stopped playing consoles altogether. I won a Playstation but only played it about 10 times! Couple of years back decided to give it another go and bought an x-box. Again it never clicked with me and I rarely played it. I was a lost soul, I needed Nintendo. The light at the end of tunnel came in the shape of the Wii. I was sceptical at the start after hearing the usual scare stories of faults/crap controls/etc etc etc. Finally I got to play one only a few weeks ago. I just played the Wii tennis/boxing etc and I thought it was class! The best thing since sliced bread (sliced bread being Mario Brothers!) I have many ppl say the same thing but that after a while it gets boring and the novelty wears off. I haven't played any pther games apart from the sports. My question is how do people find playing games like Zelda etc using these new fangled controllers and in general why should I go out and buy one as opposed to a PS3/XBOX360 (price aside)

I never had consoles but housemate got Wii - very entertaining with people, not a one player experience I have found...Didn't like carbon, did like Sports...

Havent found a great deal of *must have* titles...Novelty has worn off a little. A PS2 came into the house with Pro Evo and Guitar Hero 1 & 2 and the Wii has been left aside for quite a while...

    🤪

AH I liked Carbon so far, I find the controls great overall on the Wii.
I think its a multiplayer/retro machine at the minute but when more titles are released it will be quality!!

Excuse my ignorance but what is Carbon?

Yeah one of my mates was saying that alright. You prob wouldn't sit at home by yourself and play away. Played the tennis and boxing for ages and it was like a feckin work out!!! TBH when list the pros and cons with the Wii and competitors the price is the big pro. Think I'm gonna go for one . . .

Need For Speed Carbons controls are intially quite bizarre, however if you change them to the Wii-mote only mode it gets better.
The graphics seem on par with the original Xbox, they do look pretty good, and the game being at night, not so different from the 360 edition.
The games on the Wii are a very different beast to those of the 360/PS3, to be honest most gamers are going to wind up with on of those two, and a wii as well, the Wii games simply have a certain something, however there is little chance of Gears Of War or Resistance type games appearing on Nintys new machine, though Metroid Prime 3 looks amazing.
If the DS appeals to you over the PSP then a Wii will be right up your street, if the other way around then go for a 360, and buy a Wii later.

Super Monkey Ball is also great fun but again...needs people.

And Guitar Hero (3 i think) will be released on Wii...Using traditional Guitar controller rather than remote.

    🤪

Mine gets used all the time. At the minute, it's mostly SSX Blur and Sonic that I'm playing, both excellent games. I was unsure about SSX till I actually started playing it, and it just clicked! :D

(And the VC games get played a lot too, but not as much)

Yup, my Wii is used everyday, together with my PS2 and DS, 360 doesn't get switched on, its awaiting GTA4 and Halo3 to come back to life.
Playing the PS3 now is simply because fo the novelty of playing a new console, there's nothing yet in the software available to warrant such attention otherwise.
The Wii, on the other hand, has plenty of decent games, a few great ones and a good projected lineup.

If the current lineup seems stale, have a look at what the other international markets are playing, thats what we'll be getting in the next few months and see if there's anything there that'll float your boat.

Like you An Gaiscíoch I was a big Nintendo fan in my youth. I had a NES and then a SNES. I got the wii a couple of months ago and I love it! I've bought some of those games I used to love on the NES and SNES via the virtual console (if you don't have wireless broadband this option won't be available to you). I reckon you should go for it!

Yea go for it. You'll get upwards of 60 hours 1 player play out of zelda alone. I still stick on Wii Sports on my own and find it great for 30mins filler time trying to beat my best scores and get more medals in training. Between that and dipping into the back catalogue of Gamecube games which i had never played before I'm happiest with this console. Best buy since I had SNES.

you should go for it :) Great night in with friends

Yes you should get one, wii sports that comes with it is a great laugh and it is great value for money.
Mine gets used everyday, I do the fitness test on wii sports and have been playing Tony Hawk's downhill jam a lot and am working my way through Tiger Woods , have only played SSX blur twice for a few minutes each time as I am not really getting into it at all. I loved SSX Tricky on PS2.

I got one and spent a solid month battling my way through Zelda at every oportunity. Wii sports is a party game and a good one at that. In fact a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while came over for a few pre going out drinks last weekend and we had a few games of bowling. He was surprised that he didn't feel as stupid as peole look on the tv when playing it, despite the flailing arms :)

Anyway overall I think it's worked out as a very good purchase, Zelda's gone now but Heatseeker, SSX, Kororinpa and Rayman are all very good games out at the minute. Add to that the back catelogue of gamecube games - playing metal gear twin snakes at the minute and you've a great purchase for the price.

(Also it's worth getting it chipped, especially to play all your "legal" emulated classics)

You should get one for Zelda alone

I wouldn't agree with this. I love Zelda - probably not as much as most Nintendo heads but I like it. The controls for Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii are fantastic but I found the plot a bit crap. I just wasn't into it. Fighting was easy...the bosses were enjoyable. the mini games were great and general gameplay was good. Overall the game was good but not great.

Wii Sports is great craic especially with friends. Best game yet IMO. I can't wait for a sequel.

Red Steel is enjoyable - not fantastic but if price goes down it's worth a buy.

The Godfather is brilliant! It doesn't matter that the graphics are average (what true Nintendo fan actually cares about graphics?!) because it's just a really fun game. I've only played for a few minutes and I love it. It gets a bit of getting used to and it seems that there's a lot to do but that's great! Motion controls are great - I love the fighting! Driving is good, and creating what your character looks like is cool! Would recommend this over all games.

The Wii itself is fantastic. Sleek looking, nice price and very innotive with the Wii remote and nunchuk. The internet channel is great. If you have wireless connection it's very simple to set up. Weather/News channels are pretty cool and the Virtual Console is just genious!

I would definitely recommend it. The novelty has of course worn off but I don't think the games have encorporated the Wii remotes full potential so when some great games start coming out people might regret going for the serious graphic nerd PS3 (not to mention seriously expensive) and might want to get a Wii.

My little review (no I'm not working for Nintendo"!)

Another Nintendo head here since the days of the NES. I was even one of the few who bought a gamecube and didn't regret it - mostly because any game that was out on both it and the PS2 were better on the cube, and the cube cost me less than half of a PS2. (Have a PS2 also though).
The wii was a worthwhile purchase, and I think it's a great console. If I had lots of money, which I don't, then I'd have a Wii and 360. I wouldn't bother with the PS3 for a few reasons, price included, but that aside the biggest downfall of the PS3 is the gammy controller. Same muck as before with no dual shock and lighter and just as crappy as ever. Can't believe Sony are claiming that theirs is the "ultimate" gaming machine when they didn't put any thought into the only method of human interaction with the game.

Zelda IS the best game for the Wii imo. It's the most beautiful looking game for the Wii (although that's not that important), great controls, most enjoyable single player & the most in depth game for the Wii. I got a good 80 hours of it and it was great to look at.

Wii sports isn't exactly an in depth game because it's free & just used to show what the Wii remote can do! Yeah it's good for it's price & the multiplayer is good craic. But can you really see yourself getting 80 hours out of it? Even with the time you spend on single & multiplayer added together??
