If it has a generic Windows driver then Media Portal or GB-PVR stand a good chance of working & are pretty good to boot as well.

    Unfortunately not.
It's not a PVR just a analogue TV Tuner card so it doesnt have any of the encoding hardware required by those pieces of software.

Most media centre software seems to require it.

Did you try and they didn't work ?

As hardware encoders just take the work away from the CPU they are not actually a requirement as long as the CPU is good enough it should work. Media Portal does support software encoding tuners, although not on the list it may still work.

Windows MCE does not support software compression (AKA framebuffer) cards, including the BT878/9 series. It only supports PVR cards with built-in MPEG2 encoders.

    All is not lost however.......

Mediaportal will work, but as 8T8 said, depending on your CPU you will have to pick and choose a codec that offers good compression\CPU utilisation ratio depending on yoiur CPU and storage options. IIRC I got away with a P4 1.7Ghz.

MythTV will also work with framebuffer cards. Im not sure about GB-PVR, but I would be surprised if it didnt support your card.

One great thing about the older software\framebuffer cards is that they are really good for analog video capture from VHS, Video8 etc etc as you can have completely uncompressed video.
