Unbelieveable what is going on in Galway at the moment. The city manager does not want to provide free water to the people as it would put companies selling bottled water out of business in the area. His argument about people selling the water on in other parts of the country are nonsense also.

Galway manager says no to free water
    Tuesday, 24 April 2007 09:56

Galway City Manager Joe McGrath has ruled out the provision of free water to Galway residents.

In a letter circulated to city councillors yesterday evening, he pointed out that free water was not an option because the local authority could not keep tabs on such a scheme.

He said it would wipe out the business of water companies in Galway and free water would be hoarded by some people and sold in other parts of the country.

The city council should be paying for the water, this way the bottled water companies would not be out of business and people would have there free water.

I'm right in thinking that we do pay water charges in this country, yes?

I'm not sure on that one. I know farmers and businesses pay for it but I don't think residents have to. At least in Dublin we don't pay for it. In any case, why should we have to pay for it, what the hell are we paying so much income tax for?

We don't pay for water in Dublin yet... but will do in the future. By EU regulation, they have to charge us for it, in order to stop wastage. It's coming soon.

I'm in Galway but don't agree with free bottled water. As long as you can boil it and then drink it that's fine.
Tbh, Galway water tasted pretty crap before anyway. A boil and some squash is fine.

In fairness, they are providing one free bottle for every bottle purchased, which is a decent (if not ideal) compromise.

They've been fitting meters on the water supply in Galway too for the last few years. Charges are coming. Anyone who is part of a group water scheme (rural areas) pays an annual charge for it.

And who's paying the electricity bill? Boiling water uses a relatively large amount of power.

i think its a disgrace. as far as i'm aware access to drinkable water is a basic human right (as per the UN)....having to boil your water is expensive....what about people who are living on the breadline?? And the whole boy one get on free...this smells of a bribe by companies selling bottled water! Council should be rolling out the army lorries...going to water reservoirs outside of Galway that are not infected and bringing it back to the people of Galway.

C'mon are we a third world country or something?

I'll bet there will be a huge Green vote in Galway at the next election

Well they should by right provide filters for the peoples taps that remove the bacteria or at least sponsor part of the cost. They are what, 200 Euro for a proper solution to the problem per house. They should pay the average boil cost on peoples electricity bills in the mean time (as there aren't enough people to install these filters overnight).

Buying bottled water is stupid because its more expensive than petrol in most stores so continually buying it will eventually add up and be more expensive than installing a filter in your home.

Its very hard to retor fit water harvesters. Alot of new devlopments use them but because its new people arent keen.

People are also afraid to use black, grey and brown water. They think they are drinking their own sh!t. They are but its been cleaned so its all good
