BioDiesel VRT relief

    Hi all,

Has anyone investigated the possibility of getting a 50% RT reduction on a car that has been converted to run on rape seed oil?

The rules state that it only counts for flexible fuel vehicles which it states are only counted as Ethanol burning petrol engines and Hybrids. Originally manufactured as such.

I have issue with this because I believe rape seed oil is a more ecological solution than either. Ethanol production releases CO2 and hybrids are just a more efficient way of burning good old fossil fuels. I think even the modifications made to an ethanol burning petrol engine are less significant that for converting a petro diesel to veg oil. As far as i'm aware it's only a matter of tuning where as a proper conversion means new injectors, glow plugs and some heaters.

I would like to challenge this, would that be pointless?

I have seen a couple of references that politicians have made to biodiesel with respect to vrt relief but of course that doesn't change the law.

It'd be nice if it wasn't so difficult to make the right choice!

I have written to the motor tax office in order to get reduced road tax on my car which runs on vegetable oil. They are looking into it. I don't have much hope. You are absolutely right - rapeseed oil is far more ecofriendly than either bioethanol or biodiesel. BTW - check out www.askaboutenergy.com for energy related issues. It's a new website.

    Hello to all,

According to Quentin Gargin of the green party. The government are to extend 50% VRT relief to all biofuel vehicles and offer reduced rates of road tax for any vehicle converted to run on biofuels next December. I'm currently selling quite a few biofuel stainless steel heat exchangers for €80. These are a must for any sucessful long term veg oil conversion for non commonrail diesel engines and can be used with Waste Veg Oil (WVO) or fresh veg oil. More info at:

I know this is kinda going off topic... But if you buy Biodiesel for use as a home heating oil instead of dino diesel or kerosene, do you get it any cheaper?
