USB Drive - Will Not Mount

I recieved my new LaCie Rugged 120gb drive last Wednesday. From the outset I was a little put out that I was required to use the additional USB power adapter to run the drive on my iBook G4, as it takes up all my available USB slots. The USB data cable also seems to be quite a loose fit, and as such, the drive was disconnected a couple of times without being ejected.

In order to solve me available port problem, I purchased a Canyon CN-USBHUB3 powered USB hub, which gives me 4 new USB 2 ports. This device is working perfectly with my 1gb flash drive, and my 5th Gen iPod, but when I tried to connect up the LaCie drive, no luck. I tried to connect the LaCie the way i had been connecting it in the past, through the two USB ports on my iBook, but no joy there either.

I am quite worried about this, I have moved my iTunes music, my iPhoto library, and some old documents ot the drive, and have not had the time to create a backup (the reason I got the drive was to move them from my laptop, but I intended ot burn DVD backups also, just have not had the time.) All of this data is irreplaceable to me, particularly the iPhoto data.

The drive shows up in Disk Utility, but read an error 'Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)'. I have tried directly powering the drive, different cables, everything. I am worried the problem would now be worse, as the drive has been spinning up, and manually disconnected a couple more times, how much damage is this likely to have caused? Please tell me there is some way to get my data back, and to get the disk operational without having to resort to reformatting, and loosing everything.

I am a basic user, so please keep suggestions, or referrals as simple as possible.

Thanks a million for any help you can give, almost at my wits end here with this problem.

First thing you could try is getting someone with another computer and seeing if you can hook it up to that. Either PC or MAC should read it fine if there is no problem with the drive itself.

I've had so many problems with one of these drives for my boss in work. My god it took days to get working. And to get it working at all on windows I had to manually format using windows so that both PC's and Mac's could read and write to it.

Anywho - try a few other computers like Soundman said. See if you get the same thing. If you do - then unfortunately its going to be a costly trip to a person who might be able to get your data back.

But first things first - try it on another computer. Oh and watch out for the power by usb thing. We have a few compaq laptops lying around and they don't provide enough power to the drive to get the drive to run... So try a few if you can...
