Villian is Chief who is playing c.600 and I cover.

Im in CO with Ac10c, Chief is sitting to my immediate right.

After a number of limpers the Chief pots it to 15, I call.

Flop 10d 4s 2s, Chief bets pot of ~50. I think about it for a few moments and call.

    Turn 7c, Chief bets 100, I fold.

    standard?

    let me get this straight:

you get the flop you want and call a PSB. Why not raise the flop?

then the turn bricks out and you fold to a 2/3 PSB?

if you have him on an overpair, why call the flop bet?

    explain yourself!!

You see I already know ive played the hand badly to this point - just cos ive made mistakes thus far it doesnt mean I need to magnify them by paying him off with TPTK.

I dont get this at all. The chief I know doesnt slow down, I dont know why you would fold in this instance. I hate a flop raise though

This is interesting - what do you suppose we are beating if we get to showdown?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,212 ✭✭✭MrPillowTalk

I would have raised pre flop but since you called calling the flop is fine as you want him to bet the turn, now ship it in.

Why call the flop though? I dont think Check calling against the Chief here is terrible but i you do it on the flop you have to keep going! He does this with AK/AQ all the time!

A bluff? The chief bluffs far too much and basically never stops betting once he starts. I havent played with him in a while though, I hope he hasnt turned over a new leaf

    55 - 99; AK - AJ; KQ; KJ; K10 - J10.

And yeah, sometimes he will have you beat. But I think it is profitable over time against him if you ship it in on the turn.

Haha, I think you can probably increase that range

wow, i never ship it in here.

Surely in this hand I am only getting called by a hand that beats me?

Am I being way too nitty?

Lately i have found he will shut down on the turn oop if he is bluffing and is called on the flop. This is one of the reasons i called behind on the flop as I thought his line on the turn would let me know more about where I stood in this hand.

I suppose it may be worth noting that withing the last 20mins ive raked in a €1,650 pot when Chief paid my set with his top two. I can see that he is still hurting somewhat from that hand so I dont expect him to fire another barrell here unless his hand can withstand it.

Just call and then call any bet on the turn and any bet on the river, if you push all in it makes him hard to call with worse, but if you play it passively he will pay you off with literally anything. If you were playing a Tight sensible guy your line would make sense.

Do you not think the fact that he lost that big pot may have him "chasing" as the auld lads say and therefore making him more inclined to bluff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,751 ✭✭✭BigCityBanker

If you were playing a Tight sensible guy your line would make sense.

I accept that he is spewy but that surely doesnt mean that he cant have a hand here? For him to fire another barrell on the turn like this I think we can assign him a range of

    22 / 44 / 77 / 1010+ / A10 combos / K10 combos / Qs10s / Js10s / AsKs / AsQs / AsJs / Absolute Air.

At I push you could make a case for including 88 / 99 as he may well put me on a FD having hesitantly called his flop bet - I dont think it is fair to put it in his range tho. Chief doesnt raise 56 or 89 preflop imo.

how does my hand look againt this range?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 236 ✭✭ligger

I think him only betting 2/3 of pot on the turn is weakness. I call and see if he can fire the 3rd barrell, defo think you are in front a large % of the time here.

I dont think he is currently sufficiently rolled to be playing this LAG.

Jaysus bcb if he just losta big 1650 pot hell be steaming. He goes on monkey tilt when he loses a few pots so call him down and take him to the cleaners totally.I can definitely see him pumping it with nothing however failed poker thinking here u have no real need to get involved with 1 pair. And if u continue in teh game you willhave better oppurtunities to stack him.

BCB, any chance that you have already mentally banked a nice profit for the session and made a sub-optimal decision as a result?

Scary as it may seem, he appears to have changed his game a bit. It certainly seems he's put the breaks on a bit in terms of his continuation bets, and his bet sizing. Was at a table with him for about an hour in the double chance on saturday night, and he said himself he's startd playing fewer hands. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing for the rest of us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭eoghan104

Jesus would the chief no what a roll is? hes obviousley a changed man. I still think there was a chance hes steaming here and id call him down.

OT but ive been looking for the result and cant find it. Did Indian Ink win?

2nd, beaten a neck by a 25/1 shot in the prep race. Now 16/1 for the 2000 Guineas in 2 weeks

As for the poker, normally I'd fold but no idea how he'd react to losing a €1650 pot

I dont think so. I continued to play for 4 hours after raking in the big one.

I dont like to use the excuse of having plenty of chips in front of me for making a bad call i.e. I dont like to think along the lines of "ah sure I can afford to call". I dont think this makes me shut down tho - I like to think i continue to play my optimal game (laughs at implications of last sentence).

Interesting as he is being well backed for the last tonight at Windsor (Spiderback).

    for the mods, I'd fold

    Dont know villain but

seems like a straightforward call given his reputation

    raising anywhere seems bad

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 162 ✭✭Lissavalley

Don't know villain but I prefer a raise on the flop.

As played the 100 turn bet seems weak, but I probably still fold here. Don't want to go broke on 1 pair.

    raising is really bad.

after all I've heard about the chief I'd just call him down here.

lol - you cant include absolute air as that includes every possible hand. Against the others you are about a 66% fav though

how many hands has it been since you won the pot from him? the chief ALWAYS tries to win the next few pots he plays with pure aggression, absolute air is a possibility, any pair in the hand overcards and any 10 are possiblilities. he also takes losing personally and could have been trying to win a pot from you specifically but would have shown a complete bluff after you folded if that were the case. i personally can't fold here if he has an overpair pay him off, the chances of being beat are certainly slim enough for it to be the winnning choice. i wouldn't reaise the turn or the flop just call him down, you're probably good.

to say the chief is not prop bank rolled to play that LAG i can safely say he is barely thinking past the flop, never mind what he's eating tomorow. He has an unique sense for weakness (something which a newbie may lay down strong hands to) and the turn bet had to be expected. Bar a read i call to the river

    Just saw this thread now.

The good thing about playing the chief is he WILL pay you when you have a hand-there is no need to force the issue. Also there is no reason why he cant have a real hand in this spot he will play an overpair pretty much the same way.

I might call the turn but only if I am 100% committed to calling the inevitable bet on the river-I think without a definite read a fold here is best.I have no doubt you will find a better spot especially if hes a bit steamed up.
