Irish registration of a classic car

    Hello everyone,
I am planning of moving to Dublin, and I would like to take my VW Bus with me (a 1972 Bay Windows with left-side driving). My question is: how it is the law in Ireland about it?

In France it is registred a a "normal" car with "normal" insurance, because classic registration comes with a lot of restrictions (you cannot go outside your county, cannot go to work with it,etc...). How does it apply to Ireland, knowing that it would be my only car?

Would it be better to register it a a "normal" or a "classic" car?

Thanks for any help, I really do not knwo where to start looking!!!

    Michele

    Hi,
if you have another car, that is normal registered, then it is cheaper to get a classic insurance for your vw.
If you have no other normal registered car, then you have to register it as normal car. That will be expensive.

What do you mean by "expensive"?

Are you referring to the insurance cost or to the registration process?

    thanks,

    Michele

Insurance. Registration fee is € 50,- since it's a classic car. You can apply for either a ZV or 72-D number plate.

Ask the guys in the camper forum - they are bound to know.

I think camper vans have a whole separate category of insurance. Probably about the same price range as classic cars if I recall rightly.

    G'luck!

Thanks for the advice, but my bus is not a camper, so I think I will stick to normal insurances.

Does a car registered as "classic" has some restrictions of usage?

    Hi Turambar

Its just straight forward, you register the car here in Ireland and because it is over 30 years old it will only cost you €50. You can get quotes for insurance as a daily driver or as a limited milage per year classic. They usually limit the milage too 3000 miles per year if you do more than that they will just charge you a bit extra depending on how much over the 3000. Contact the Southern Volks Folk Club here in Ireland they will give you all the info.

    Safe Motoring :)

i think the answer the op wants here is that there is no distinction between normal and classic cars other than the concessions on road tax and nct for over 30 yr old vehicles. You are free to use your vehicle however and whenever you want (except for any limitations there may be on your insurance).

Not in Ireland or the UK. Do what you like, where you like, with what you like. You just get everything cheaper!

Thats odd. My brother has a LHD '72 VW with bay windows, and insures it as a camper - with no mileage limit.
Is yours not something like this?

Perhaps that's because maybe your brother's bay window *is* a camper?

Whereas perhaps Turambar's bay window *isn't*???

Not all bay windows are campers you know ;)
