    Kind of!

I was reading the Property Section of the Tribune yesterday and nearly fell off the sofa when I saw this picture
    419960785_e032281f46.jpg

Well, it was a crop of this picture, but definitely it. It felt really strange. At first I was shocked, then chuffed, then disappointed, then suspicious.
The reason for the disappointment was because I have this image on a stock site, so I get f*ck all for it. The suspicion was in case they just took it off Flickr. I've emailed the editor to see if I can find out...

Are you sure it was the exact same picture ?

Whereabouts in the property section was it - ie was it used in an advert or was it used by the paper itself ?

    *(snip)

*Just read that you had it on a stock site - that will probably explain it.

    Nice photo.

    Go IP woes!

It was used in the commercial section (p.19) of the property supplement and was used with an article about rents in the docklands area.
When I saw it, I got the original and cropped it and it's definitely my picture. It's with a stock site already, so I am hoping thet's where they got it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm chuffed to see my picture in the paper, I was just wondering where they got it from

same cloud in sky, do they credit photographers for any photos they use, i thought they might have to

do you get paid when your stock image is used and can you check this to see they didnt nick it from elsewhere

edit: check the terms of use on the stock site you use and make sure they obeyed the terms of use

I'd be hoping they robbed it off your Flickr.

which is why the ol 'turn off all sizes' option is handy in flickr...

Interesting thread.. any way you can check with the stock site cambo and see if its been purchased??
    Keep us informed..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

It was purchased twice on Friday and once on Saturday. For privacy reasons I cannot see who bought it, but I am assuming that it was one of those purchases.

The stock agency gets paid ny the newspaper. You will get a (very) small percentage based on what you agreed to when you signed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

well I got a reply from the Property Editor and she did indeed get the pic from the stock agency.
As for the small percentages, yes they are small, but they add up. I wouldn't like to start a debate about stock agencies though, it's a bit of a hornet's nest

Where is this country going to when even the newspapers steal???

Make a print you your photo, than a print of crooped one and original of that magazine. And go to see the editr or manager. And tell them, that you are going to your solicitor...

Congrats on the publication. It's an excellent photo.

It seems fair enough that they went through the stock agency so it wasn't stealing. I'd hate to think that newspapers were scouring Flickr for material and using it without permission.

It would be interesting to know what they paid the agency and what percentage the photographer gets.

You'd be suprised how many do. After a recent (and ongoing) issue, I've decided to add a creative commons or all rights reserved notice to the EXIF of all my photos, depending on their intended use.

Congratulations, its a funny feeling to see your own work in a newspaper. Keep it up

.25c seems very cheap.. still tho I guess its better than nothing. I wonder does this mean newspapers are keeping smaller numbers of staff photographers if they can just get more or less any image for 0.25c..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

yes, it is f*ck all. However, I'm taking the photos anyway as it's my hobby. Might as well have them selling on a few websites instead of just sitting on my hard drive. I get about $50 a month between the two stock sites that I subscribe to.
As for smaller newspapers like the Tribune, yes I would imagine that they have very few, if any, photo staff for this kind of thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,735 ✭✭✭mikeanywhere

Most newspapers tend to use agencies or freelance photographers as its much cheaper unless they have fulltime photographers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Anything that you put on Flickr that you also use for stock you should stick a watermark on it.

a mate of mine has seen the amount of work he's getting fall dramatically because one company he used to do a lot of work for started doing this.

yes, but the white balance is changed in this pic. Mostly all you get are blobs of orange due to the sodium lighting

Well done! (And a nice shot too!).

I think the future is to be a freelance mercenary and shoot events. You really can't find stock photos of little Johnny's birthday now, can you?
