Yeah, exactly. If you believe in evolution, then you believe that creatures don't evolve during their own lifetime, but rather give birth to the genetically evolved/improved versions of themselves. If humans, after centuries of keyboard usage, are going to have a sixth finger (I'm including the thumb as a finger for the sake of pedantry) it's not just going to grow on them, but rather five-fingered humans will give birth to six-fingered babies.

So let's say for the sake of hypothesis that the chicken evolved from an animal called the Chickbot2007. The Chickbot2007, through the course of evolution and mutation, laid the first chicken egg which then hatched to give the first chicken.

Though I guess you could argue that the chicken embryo inside the egg may also have constituted a chicken, meaning the chicken egg and the chicken came into being at the same time...

Yore Ma came first, because I'm that good.

Seriously though, I remember reading an article about this on CNN a while back that claimed the egg came first. Take from it what you will, it is CNN after all.

Actually evolutio implies the egg came first and that it was laid by a pre-chicken bird ancestor.

Hahah, alright I was going to leave a warning to all eating breakfast, but fair enough. I might point out that this particular dish is served throughout southeast asia, most particularily in the Philippines, and its not too graphic for around a hundred million people in that neck of the woods. Mind you, they do say you have to eat it with the lights turned off...

Depends on your definition of a "chicken egg":
If a chicken egg is an egg containing a chicken then the egg came first.

If however a chicken egg is an egg laid by a chicken then the chicken came first.

The egg would have been laid by different bird.

    Which came first.

Eggs lack the the ability to orgasm.

Scientifically: the first modern chicken was the offspring of the last direct ancestor of domestic chickens to not share that classification. Therefore, a non-chicken did, in fact, lay the first chicken egg, i.e., the egg came first. <---- Straight from Wiki .Not a good thread for a monday morning

It doesn't matter who came first as long as someone did.

I was going to say that.

The chicken leaned back in bed, cockily smoking a cigar and looking smug, while the egg sat hunched and tense, glaring out the window...

I guess that answers that question

I'd say the cockerel came first, and the chicken had to finish herself off afterwards while he snored and farted beside her.

For me, chicken will always come first.

If theres no chicken, then i'll boil an egg.

It all depends on what one means by the question. Either answer is correct depending on the what somebody means by the question.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA, or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal. Before chickens evolved(some 8,000 years ago) there were the Red Jungle Fowl which is the creature that created the chicken. This was a type of chicken in itself I suppose. So what came before that etc. was the first chicken born from an egg or was it born life and laid an egg. So the first official "chicken" pecked its way out of an egg laid by a bird that was not-quite-a-chicken. Depending on how you look at it, the wild chicken--came first. Before that and before that etc would lead us to a time before dinosaurs and the true ancestors of chicken did not lay eggs.
How far back must we go, it all depends on what you mean, technically the answer is the chicken if you go all the way back.
Scientists say eggs evolved more than 1 billion years ago, in the oceans of Earth. When land animals evolved about 250 million years ago, their eggs had a tough covering to retain moisture on dry land. Egg-layers like amphibians, reptiles, and insects flourished. The first "land eggs" pre-dated chickens by about 250,000,000 years.
So "the egg" may be one answer to the old riddle, but here's another, if a little longer: The chicken came after the bird, the bird came after the dinosaur, the dinosaur came after the egg. And the egg came long after the first single-celled bacteria, the prokaryotes, evolved in the oceans, some 3.5 billion years ago.
What answer you take from that is up to you.

    It depends on the question.
When somebody says " Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
It depends on whether they mean eggs in general, chicken eggs, chickens or the chickens ancestors.
