I've been picked to be one of the 500 public participants to receive the new DTT set top box, does anyone know if BBC 1 & 2 will be added as BBC 3 & 4 are currently on the list, also will UTV be added too ?

Try the Terrestrial board. There are comprehensive threads there.

Well done on getting in the trial. In answer to the question, as I understand it, no. Those channels won't be added.

Hmm - How did you manage to swing that? Was there an application process?

The son of a biatch. Lady Luck was prowling around some parts of Louth it seems. If I remember correctly, you're living in Dundalk. Presumably they went to areas that can actually see the mast from their house so as to ensure a good signal and whatnot. If only I lived 200 metres further north:)

It could also be too that a few months back I was having problems with my broadband and there was an issue raised that it may of been the DTT test interfering with it. I had techs from Eircom and a guy in connection with DTT round, so maybe I could of be stuck on a list or something back then.

I'll let you all know what it's like when I get the box (should have it in a day or so).

Yes your correct and can see the mast from my house too.

Given that UPC (owner of NTL/Chorus) have kicking up a fuss about these tests, I doubt that anything that would make the DTT Trial (even though it is limited by time and numbers) a realistic alternative to any other subscriber delivery service would be entertained - especially as their is no framework for the future of these services. Given that most people just want the UK and Irish terrestrials there is a possibility that with a full channel line up that up to 500 people could cancel their SKy, NTL or Chorus sub for the duration of the trial.

DTT won't interfere with DSL Broadband.

What UPC thinks about the trial, or Sky thinks about it should not influence decisions. DTT is a basic National Infrastructure. Sky & UPC are foreign Pay TV companies.

Also Virgin Megastores might as well complain about Tesco selling DVDs. Or BOI/UB/NIB/AIB complain about Halifax.

No-one is entitled to a monopoly or protection.

Unless DTT is a realistic alternative to Satellite/Cable, there is no point in having it. We might as well just stick with 4 analogue terrestrial channels.

Your logic is very wierd BrianD.

Also no-one sensible should be cancelling Sky or UPC for a Trial, no matter what is on it as it is not always going to be the same from week to week and we know it has an end date. For anyone getting it, it is icing on the cake.

Please read my posting - I am refering to the current status quo i.e. the trial and speculating why certain channels are absent from the trial. Just enough to whet interest and not enough for people to get really excited about.

My observation was that in the absence of a national framework/plan/policy in place the DTT trial could cause some pain to the existing players (and they have already commented publicly on RTE's entry into the market). Personally, if I was offered multichannel TVi.e all UK and Irish terrestrials for a defined period time I would cancel/reduce any similar contracts that I have. If the trial was to last as long as Government inaction on the issue it might be a long one! :D

Nobody is entitled to protection but comparison to Tesco and Halifax is not valid - they operate in an open market. Having said that, it's probably not a bad idea that UPC, Sky and anybody else get used to the idea of free DTT.

I didn't think the trial was supposed to attract people to DTT. Is it not supposed to be limited to those who have been chosen?

I agree with Watty on that being a foolish course of action.

Surely, they are already well used of it in the UK.

I don't think it's avisable to post public images of the viewing card.

Why not ? Unless he's signed something saying not to it's hardly something to get worked up about. It's just a card. If pictures of the Humax box can be shown on the national news, what harm is a scan of the card ? (with any numbers on it, blanked out of course ! )

Is there not a card inside the Ci module? Actually I wondering which CI module it is?

Agreed, just hide the numbers and all should be fine. :)

It was the numbers on the card I was concerned about.

It looks like any of these, but with a different logo & text :)

    Warning: may have NSFW adverts

I make no recommendation or endorsment of this site. Link purely to illustrate what viewing cards look like

LOL. A bit OTT there Watty. :D

I'm well aware what a smart card looks like  I've been installing satellite systems since well B4 sky even started their first channel and have handled many different satellite smart cards from many different companies over the years. You really have to be living on a different planet not to know what a viewing card looks like. :D

I'm asking for a picture for 2 reasons. 1, I'm curious and 2, to prove that the person really is in the trial.

It's white and has numbers on it. Also DCMNR stamped on them. Does that cure your curiosity. Also why would you doubt and need proof that someone that says that they are on the trial are actually on it???? Odd that.

Sounds like a viewing card to me. The mods arn't asking for proof. Someone claiming to be on trial when they aren't has their own fantasy induced problems without being hounded by Mods.
