Weird Windows Error - Help Please

    Hello.

I have a legal version of Windows XP Pro, fully updated and all that. Today, for no apparent reason, windows refused to start. It got stuck in a loop at start up, fail to launch, restart, fail to launch, restart etc. Safe mode did nothing either. So I got my XP CD, told it repair the existing installation on the C: drive (we also have a storage D: drive). It deleted a bunch of files and resintalled them and when it booted up next time it went to the screen when you're originally installing windows.

It pops up an error message saying that it can't copy certain files (all .dll) and asks me to point it to where they can be found. They're sitting right there on the disk but it wouldn't copy them anyway. So I told it to cancel, rebooted without the disk in the drive and it sat at the loading window indefinately. Rebooted and this time it loaded fairly normally, with some odd messages. Daemon tools tells me that I must have at least Windows 2000 installed (bizarre and worrying) and something else pops up briefly telling me that its finalising installation of my sound card.

So, thats where I am now. I'm backing stuff up to DVDs incase the whole system goes kaboom, and I'm bothering nice people on the internet for help :)

I'm working on the theory that its either a virus thats corrupting key Windows files or the C: drive itself is slightly corrupted. We have McAfee installed (I hate it) but it didn't give any warnings. I'm afraid to reboot in case it won't start again, so my plan for now is to back up everything and just format C: with a fresh copy of the OS. There's dozens of gigs of files on D: that are just too big to backup, if its a virus is there any chance it could affect that drive too?

    Ideas?

Don't think its a virus...If you want to tell for sure

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

PnkBstr, or Punk Buster, is the anti cheat software that comes with Battlefield as far as I know. I'm also not aware of having a Yahoo toolbar...

Doesn't look like theres anything dodgy there. The Yahoo! Toolbar probably got installed with Reader, depending on the version of the installer you downloaded. You're right about PunkBuster too.

I'd be more inclined to say that your problem was probably caused by a file system or hard drive failure though. I'd say continue your backups, and do a thorough disk scan before formatting the computer.

Is your D drive on the same disk as your C? You might want to consider backing up what you want off that as welll just in case it is a HDD problem.

No, D: is an entirely seperate hard drive. And while I'd be tempted to back up the files on it, we're talking 200gig ish of videos and game data, so it'd take all night and dozens of disks. Not worth it unless I'm almost sure its gonna be lost.

I ran disk defragmenter and it finished fine, found no problems with the drive. I'm very confused now. The computer has restarted without incident.

If its any help, the exact error Daemon Tools gives me is "Initialisation Error 0. This program requires at least Windows 2000 with SPTD 1.37 or higher. Kernel debugger must be activated."

    /me googles.

You mean Checkdisk right? Defragment doesn't check for errors.
At this stage it's probably faster to just reinstall, between the initial error and the aborted repair you'd spend more time researching/troubleshooting than actually starting from scratch.
IF it was a virus of some kind it could have infected files on your other drive but it will not be active after the format. To be sure get your AV up to scratch before opening anything from the other partitions/drives and do a full scan of those files.
