Rte Radio listenership

Rte DJs and TV presenters often justify their salaries by the size of their audiences. How important are individual personalities to the audience figures? I think for example Gerry Ryans show would have similar audience numbers regardless of who was doing his show with a similar format. I think the Late Late would have a similar viewership if Kenny was replaced by a capable but in no way excellent presenter. Are RTE stars being overpaid relative to their individual talent on the spurious basis that they are responsible for the audience numbers and not the high profile of RTE and the format of their show being popular?

Are RTE stars overpaid relevant to their talent and ability to pull in listeners? 13 votes

Yes they are overpaid, the format and high profile of RTE helps them

No they are not overpaid, they are mainly responsible for the high audiences

    Absolutely,definately, no question about it.

the RTE payscale is a National disgrace and cannot be justified by audience figure/reach.

A group of articulate ,brass necked people are milking the system, aided and abetted by the management and political structure and nobody who matters has the balls to say STOP

Ah but they'll go to er....Newstalk or Today FM if RTE don't pay them a fortune. ;)

True Mike, but I don't think they'd pull across their entire listenership if they did. Ian Dempsey is a good example.

I think people get in the habit of tuning into certain stations and certain times, rather than tune into personalities.

Look! the population of Ireland is circa 4.1 million.

RTE would like us dumbasses to believe that if they did not pay their top people megabucks of TAXPAYERS money ,they would immediately get fixed up with a rival station for the same bucks!!!!

 They would in their nut brown b****ckses.

The cake is not big enough for that.

When will intelligent people even begin to realise this.

DW I was joking! Hence the use of "er...." and a ;)

Newstalk would'nt be able for the wages short of a major cash injection then if a top level name was landed they'd have to effectivly re-launch the station which costs lots and as you say peoples station habits are pretty hard to shift.

    Mike.
