Amount of spam mails in Gmail account

I'm so fed up of having to delete spam messages from my Gmail account.

Gmail says it has a good anti-spam system, well, it doesn't seem to be working for me!!

My question is: Should I ask my employer to change the format of my e-mail address on our website in order to reduce the amount of spams?

Thank you in advance for any advice.:)

Does your company not have their own email addresses? Do you use gmail addresses? Weird...

I get tons of spam but it all goes into the spm folder. Is it getting to your inbox?

I've been getting a lot of spam into the inbox of my main gmail account lately too. Really annoying. They all seem to be coming from yahoo accounts which is how they're slipping through.

All go straight to the Spam folder for me, rarely that they slip through.

First of all, I don't work for a 'company'. Yes, in fact, some of us use gmail addresses.

Yes, it goes into the spam folder, but sometimes I get 13 of them all at once, which I find strange.

I never said mine didn't go to the Spam folder either!

What I was going to suggest to my empoyer is to write the email addresses like this: "emailname(at)gmail(dot)com"
    or "firstname.surname@gmail.com".

Other solutions would be greatly appreciated. I know that one can have Spamguards ushc as http://www.spamfighter.com/Pro too, but if you don't choose from who want on your whitelist, I'm afraid I won't receive important ones. So another question is what is the best solution to minimise spams?

if it goes into the spam folder it is filtered. I don't think the contents of the spam folder are counted toward your allowed quota so it really doesn't bother me!

What would really help things is if ISPs took a more proactive anti-spam stance. Most if the spam in the world is apparently from hyjacked Windows computers on residential internet connections. Now, if ISPs actively blocked all outbound traffic to port 25 that was not destined for there own email server, it would actually result in all these zombie machines being unable to send out these emails. But, it would not prevent a legitimate user from sending an email through his ISP's email server. I checked the source of most of the spams I received once, and most of them were from computers on DSL accounts in the US, some were from Russia and others from China.

If it is going into your spam folder in gmail just ignore it. It has no effect on your quota.

If they are appearing in your inbox then they are spamming from a valid email address. Just mark the checkbox and report it as spam. It gets moved to your spam folder and the contents/email address are scanned to stop similar emails getting in.

My gmail is pretty public account and I think I have ever seen 1 spam mail appear in inbox (saying I won the lottery).

not everyone uses their isp's smtp server though. for example I use gmail's.

The email quota thing doesn't bother me, what does bother me is wasting my time deleting these spams when I have better things to be doing!

The thing is that there is no reason to bother deleting them!

na, they're in the spam folder, they're not taking up your space. Forget about them. I'd say the spam folder is automatically emptied by gmail every so often but it makes no difference to you!

^ Yep, after 30 days the spam gets deleted. And it;'s hardly a time consuming task to delete the spam. Two clicks and it's gone.

If you make your email address publicly available (i.e. on a web site) then you're guaranteed to be spammed, it's the single worse thing you could do.

You are a contribuiting factor for how much spam you get.

If you use the addresses to sign up for free offers, registrations, newsletters etc it will get onto spammer lists. Look what happened 30 minutes after I signed up here.

Yes, indeed it is: every 30 days. I'll save time by just ignoring them for now on. Thanks for that. :D

Conchial, I presume you are actually referring to "Lolita" (by Nabokov). Lola is not a synonym for Lolita. ;)

No, in fact, I use my GMail address exclusively for work. I use another mail box for industry newsletters, never commercial related ones though. As for free offers  , never!!!

Anyone who has actually read it will be aware of the fact that Humbert and others refer to her as Lo, Lola, Dolly and Lolita pretty much interchangably.

Then 'work' has been selling your email address or publishing a directory somewhere public.

I get maybe 2-3 pieces of spam per month. What am I doing wrong?

    Yeah, wasn't lola a showgirl?

Or indeed a girl desperately in need of 100,000 Deutschmarks ?

Well, that is a minority, still, blocking outbound SMTP is just one measure that would stop spammers using compromised windows machines to send out the junk.
