I know that the Irish Naval Reserve ( Slua Muiri ??) have been the butt of a lot of cruel humour over the years so lets get that out of the system first !

What sorts of things are you likely to get to do in the Irish Naval Reserve ? I know that there is "official" blurb about this but I am looking for some "real" information on what it is like really

I joined the Naval Reserve and attended for 3 years, im still a member but not active.

    Here goes from my experiences.

    Foot & Arms Drill
    Arms Training
1 Annual Shooting Range, Styer & Bap
    Learning boatwork in theory
    Small Craft Handling
Powerboating Seariders and Geminis at our disposal and used and trained in by all members
    MTB's (waterford has the freya)
    Sailing & Rowing (BP 18)
We also get the credne to use sometimes
    Navigational Skills
    Radio Skills
participation in 3 marches a year
Fire Fighting (3 day intensive course) Including working as a team to put out real fires
    Sea Survival
Wednesday Night training, weekend training, camps and sea going
    Guard Dutys
    Stand To Dutys
Search and Rescue on rivers when requested
Active paid participation in events such as the tall ships

Aswell as this you are allowed to take part as a member of crew on any of the Irish Naval Vessels, you can go on patrols and it is really an amazing thing, you work doing lookout, at the helm, as part of the boarding party, shown how to use all items on board and everyone on the ship is eager to show you how to do stuff, lots of OS and ABs also take time to go abroad with the reserve, i remember in particular one person from my unit going to holland and another to new york.

Money is good for a school or college student and the reserve is very flexible.
