Ok I'm looking into buying new amp. Don't want stack but something powerful enough to do gigs. I play mostly metal(death, progressive)so would like something that suits. Have been looking at Laney and Peavey models but not sure. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also wondering where msot people buy there gear as in this part of Ireland not many options!!!! Thanks in advance for any helpful comments.

Something like an ENGL Thunder is gonna be an obvious suggestion around that price:

^+1 If you could push 1000 and get the Screamer you would be sorted!

edit: The Thunder has more gain so get that!

With a budget of up to 800 euro Id really encourage you to go the second hand root, a world of quality amps available out there.

True, but most decent heavy metal amps are heads/stacks which he's not looking for. There'd prob be a lot more recommendations if you were open to a stack

In my experience, the Thunder 50 is a true monster, it should do what you're looking for nicely.

The Peavey 6505/5150 CANNOT be beaten for distortion. Dont care what anyone sales, Engl, Mesa, Marshall, whatever The Peavey leaves them all behind. Expensive enough though.

I wouldnt dismiss any particular brand straight off.

Some consider the 5150 thin and buzzy. Plenty of guys are using Marshall DSL/TSL for metal (not a huge fan myself), you can pick them up cheap 2nd hand.

ENGL are definitely a high quality amp, certainly should be on your list to check out. Laney don't strike as a 'metal' , though im sure theres plenty of gain on tap, definitely check out something like the TT series.

Theres a few budget amps to consider. Bugera is behringers new line of amp 'clones'. The reviews havent started coming in yet, so i wouldnt buy until you see how they pan out, but they could be interesting, copies of the 5150 and peavey XXX afaik. Considering the 5150 was a straight copy of one of Eddie's Soldanos, I wouldnt worry about the 'copy' thing.

TBH, theres a lot out there. Try out everything you can.

Whoever reckons the 5150 is thin and buzzy is listening to a broken one. Try one of the clones for sure though and see what you find!

I'll definetly recommend an ENGL, depending on your budget. Nothing sounds quite as good distortion wise, they're just incredibly tight sounding amps, and awesome cleans too, which I find is invaluable.

But honestly, 5150s/6505s certainly aren't bad either. I won't poo-poo them, and you'd definetly be onto a winner if you got one, I just think ENGL edge them out considerable.
