I think this is a software related problem, if this isn't the place for it apologies.

I wanted to watch some programmes off the rte website and it lets you download files that end in .smil Realplayer is set as the default programme to open it (not sure if that's my doing or the website:confused: ) but when I download it its done in a second or two and when I try to open it realplayer opens the file and the running time is 00.00

Any ideas what the problem is? As you may have guessed I know little about this sort of thing so I'm sorry I can describe the problem better.

As I understand it .smil is a streaming format which means you are not downloading an entire file (which you can then play while offline) but are simply downloading the location (?) of the file.

In other words when you attempt to "play" the file the real player application must be able to connect to the internet to stream the content from rte's server. You may have to configure real player to enable access to the internet. I don't use realplayer myself so can't advise how exactly to do this. I assume there should be a network configuration pane somewhere in realplayer preferences/setup.

Ah right so I should try opening it with realplayer as opposed to downloading it and then trying to look at it. Will try that so thanks.
