No wonder many over there shed a tear for the communist era when their once great country is reduced to drug dealing, asset stripping and hunger. Poor blighters. Anyway, some red tinted glasses imagery.....here and what a song!

It's true.. best Anthem ever (especially the Hunt for Red October version - great movie!):

(Controversial question of the day: Much better than the Irish one? - I say yes)

Ah easily. Amhran na bhFiann is drab and depressing compared to such anthems as this and Les Marsailles (or however you spell it). I love the retro footage of happy little soviets working their bollox off for mother russia. Wonder where those peeps are today.

That's beautiful. Brings a tear to my red eye.

Always remember when I was a kid this guy singing the USSR anthem to me most Saturday nights.

Listen to that capitalist pig Vince McMahon talking over his singing and disrespecting his fatherland. I personally blame him for 9/11 now!

By far the worlds best national anthem! That original youtube clip with all the Soviet footbage is very good. I wonder was that made in the ussr backi nthe day?

It may well have been. There's also an english version with much the same footage. I love the 'feel' of that footage, propaganda or not!

Exactly it's all about the "feel" of it. I suppose its the picture of the ideal world that we all want to see and be part of but which failed to happen over there.

The anthem is mind blowing though!

I actually have it downloaded - I have a version from the sixties on which you can hear the LP crackle very well!!! I also have one from 1977 which has much better sound but it has lyrics in it, unlike the sixties one.

Seeing as I have no Russian, I preferred the lyric-less version.

Murph, do you know any site I can download more versions from? I have tried one or two but they havent been great really.

Haha, good find. Remember it well. Have one on tape where he fights Hulk Hogan who spits on the flag.

I just typ random words into youtube and see what comes back. my favourite bit is the grain shooting up the conveyor quickly cutting to an aerial shot of an ice breaker at sea. great stuff.

Yeah that clip of the ice-breaker is class alright.

The new version (same anthem) that they show before the TV station shut down over there for the night is good too - all very modern but you can tell it's still good old Russian propaganda.

Wish we had a national anthem close-down on RTE like they have!

Wasn't it after the midnight prayer or something like that on RTE? Lots of images of flowers, fields and some such nonsense. :)

This drab tosh you mean! Compare the too and it's no wonder the ruskies sent men into space and we well, wished we had electricity to watch men being sent into space on TV! :D

We did have, it seems....... way back in the 1960's! I remember seeing a clip on some website (might have been The TV Room or some similar one) once of the original RTE closedown sequence from the early 1960's and it had all these images of farmers and people in factories hard at work and that kind of thing. It finished with an Aer Lingus jet taking off into the sky in a sort of "Hey, look how modern and advanced Ireland is nowadays! We even have jet planes!" kind of thing! :D Can't seem to find the clip anywhere online now, though, but if anyone else here finds it please post up the link as I'd love to see this shining example of De Valera era, almost Communist Russia-style propaganda again! :D

Oh, and here's the one I think most of us remember best, and which Ruu mentioned, from the 70's and 80's. I remember that for some weird reason this always scared the shít out of my younger sister back in the day and she would go running out of the room because she couldn't watch it! :D

Haha, good find murphaph and aidan. Having a good chuckle at the programme schedule there in the related search, "a mouth watering start..: Where in the World and Glenroe for Sunday. Ah Sunday evenings. :)

I'd forgotten how bad that Irish version was - I mean, it could be set anywhere .. where's the "Irishness"??

I forgot too that RTE had ripped off the BBC clock of that era too (check out the "related videos")

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Fabio

Terrible!!! I mean, nowadays RTE could make a really good picture or movie montage to play the national anthem to...
