    Hi,

I'm looking for a decent webcam for Skype. I'm told that not all are compatible with Mac.

Can anyone recommend a good one that will do the job - nothing too expensive, but I'd prefer something of good quality so I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest. I'm using a G4 PowerBook, so one that will clip on to the screen would be cool. A pity iSight is no longer available................... :(

    Thanks.

i did a bit of reseach on this topic a few months ago as i have a g5 imac before they installed the camera, as far as i could find out the only cameras that were compatable with macs were the apple isight cameras, and they were over $100 at the time, and theyre not sold in the eu because they contain some lead parts so you gotta buy over the net from america. so i gave up.

although with the popularity of skype these days there may be one or two new cameras in the market

loads of webcams work on osx with macam. There's a listing of the cams here. I have one working with this and Skype. Don't know what make or model. Can confirm if that helps.

Also, a camcorder that has a firewire connection can be used as a webcam. That's how I'm doing it. No drivers needed just plug and play.

Thanks for all the links and suggestions.

m_stan, can you confirm the make and model of yours, if you get a chance.

    Thanks again folks.

I tried that in the beginning but the camera powers itself off after a while if you don't press record (Sony Handycam) Superb quality though !!

Macam supports a wide range of USB webcams, I have an old Philips Toucan camera that works very well, a lot of Creative, Genius and D-Link cameras work too. This is the preferred route IMO.

mine is also a Philips webcam of some description. No idea what model - I picked it up second hand. My advice would be to get something cheap that is on the Macam list and you should be grand.

The Xbox 360 webcam is only €50, and works with OS X without drivers. It's good quality too.

urban, if your on ichat/skype, and your using the xbox camera, can you use the inbuilt mic on macs for sound input, as the isight had it built into it if i remember right, so considering there is no sound on the xbox have you encountered any problems?

Any of the logitech quickcams work fine without additional drivers in 10.4 :)
