Im looking for a good wide angle that will work as a general carry around and also go on my film cameras , for Velvia stuff etc.
I already have a 10 -22 , obviously this is fine but wont do for a general carry around and wont go on the film camera or a full frame 5D.

This lens looks good , ( EF 17 -40L ) does anyone have one and would you recommend it ,

Also , interestingly enough , Komplett are cheaper than Technik Direckt for this lens at the moment , seems they may have come in line at last !!

Basically its 814 on Technik , plus 22 shipping , and 775 on Komplett plus around 25 shipping. ( 12 shipping if you go an post , but Id rather it arrived in one piece !! )

I got it in New York in March (just to make you sick......for €500 in B&H).

It is a fantastic lens. It's sharp and it has lovely saturated colours. It's very light too for an "L" lens. Easy to handhold at slower speeds. So far I'm delighted with it.

i've one - and it's a great lens, got it from the US too :)

heres the review that convined me that i was getting the right lens, i'd recommend it

thats a bit spendy around €800 eh?

actually i was looking around e-bay.ie earlier on and saw one for about €470 or something had a "buy now" option too that'd make it a little dearer not much tho! maybe €25/30 extra some fella located in Galway - might be worth checking out

    good luck whichever you do

    :)

Have one, would recommend it, handles flare very well, even with the crappy lenshood that comes supplied. Got from eBay HK.

Delurking to say I love this lens. I got it when I bought my 10D three years ago and I rarely use anything else. It's kind of spoiled me for other lenses in fact. One thing I would say is that it's not great for very low-light being only f4 but the colours and contrast are wonderful and I've been surprised how dark it has to get before it becomes unusable.

800 seems a bit steep. This guy has it for about 550 (incl shipping), he's a great seller that rymus put me on to. I get all my equipment from him now:

Not to hijack someone else's thread but ...

Does anyone have an opinion of the 17-40 F4L versus the 16-35 F2.8L (Mk I or II) ?

I know the price tag and speed are the main differences ... but any opinions about the value from money of the extra spend ?

The difference is that the 16-35 is F2.8 which gives you one stop extra, not alot but it could be the difference of getting the pic or not. If you work in a low light situation the 16-35mm would be the one to get, but just for general use 17-40 is just as good at an affordable price. Loads of websites do alot of pixel peeping on comparing these lenses, after using both of these lenses, I think you will find it hard to see the difference in print.

This is a review that compares the 17 -40 to the 16 -35 , for me the price of the 16-35 rules it out , especially in this part of the world , the lens can be got for about 1300 dollars in america , here its closer too 1635 ( technik direckt )

Thanks to Fionn for that site by the way ,

I will be using this type of lens mostly outdoors , during the day , with some evening cityscapes thrown in , which are always on a monopod / tripod , long exposure type of shot so the F2.8 is not really going to be used by me.
Im happy with the nifty 50 for the few low light shots I take!

So the 17-40 will do , I have seen a huge range of prices , from about 500 to 850 , I dont want to buy from ebay , and I want a warranty that applies here , so the cheapest price in europe is what Im going to go for.

I had a look in the local camera shops in Dublin today , I wont go on a rant , lets just say they ruled themselves out pretty quickly on price , I thought one of them was quoting me for the 16-35 it was that high !!
