    Hey,

Has anyone taken the prunge yet and installed Linux on the ps3? If so is it easy to do. What i really want is for a good emulator to come out for linux so that we can play the top end pc games on the ps3's beast of a processor.

It's pretty straight forward to install. You'll find a guide here using YellowDogLinux:

Probably even easier would be an Ubuntu installation, now with a PS3-specific image:

Just remember to back up your HDD before installing - an installation wipes everything on the hard disk.

You could get some emulators working with this (SNES, MAME etc.), but something like WINE for playing Windows games won't work because it requires an x86 processor (Cell is powerpc). I don't think the makers of WINE have any plans to port it to Cell, it's very x86-optimised/dependent. On top of that, something like Wine would need GPU access, which is restricted with PS3 linux currently.

Dont know if i'll bother then. I liked the idea of being able to play the PC games but that doesnt seem likely. Must say, you seem to know your stuff though :)

That was never going to happen.

I've ran linux on my ps3 and it's fairly slow to be honest.

The cell is a great CPU but is not designed as an alround computing processor, it really has the same kind of peformance on linux as say a Semperon or Celeron processer.

Add the fact that you have only 256mb of memory, which is **** poor for any computer these days.

Also LINUX is not that user friendly. Unless you have some experience and are willing to have to correct stuff using terminal and .conf files then forget it.

A great idea in principal, in practive the PS3 is and will remain a Console, not a computer.
