CWC Day 39 Thread - Australia V New Zealand

Interesting enough game, even if both teams are already through to the semis. A big win for NZ would see the black caps top the Super 8's and play South Africa in the semis. Cant see that happening though.

    Thoughts?

    Updates here later.

    Neither can I.

I can see New Zealand do a "Sri Lanka" and rest Bond, but be more subtle and say he has a niggle. Oram is definitely out of this game.

Will be cheering on NZ today hopefully they can do the business. Australia will probably continue to bore the rest of the cricketing world and stroll it :(

I say NZ to win but not enough to avoid a SA vs. AUS semi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

And Bond is missing. ;) Gillespie and Michael Mason come in.

Australia win the toss and are going to bat.

Is it too late to withdraw my prediction?

Aussie flaying the black cap bowling at the moment.

1 hr and 20 mins later, its still no better for the Black Caps.

Australia 172/2 in the 27th over
    Australia Run Rate 6.40

    Hayden 77*
Ponting gone for 66, Gilchrist went for 1.
Clarke at the crease with Hayden

Australia and Sri Lanka are doing far better than any other teams in the tournament
My money's on Australia to win overall.
It really is - 50 quid.
Apparently Sri Lanka did not play their best bowlers against the Aussies in the previous match - their secret weapon for the finals.

Nobody's going to stop Australia. Most teams have two or so key batsman and if you can dismiss them cheaply then you're in a great position. Australia's batting line up really doesn't have a weakness.

Hayden is in incredible form, Ponting probably the best batsman in the world at the minute. Gilchrist although not at his peak, still capable of a big score. Clarke is more than useful. Symonds a great smasher of the ball. Perhaps Hussey is the weak link as his form of late has been woeful, but even still he did average 90 odd a while back, and if he is the weak link in the batting line up then you don't find him until no.6. We're all doomed.

I never thought anyone would consider Hussey a weak link :D

Going back a few months, he was the "not out" batsman in most games averaging something crazy high like 90.

    What a talent.

    Wickets tumbling.

Australia 233/4 in the 36th over.

Hayden out for a ton, Clarke just short of his half-ton.

um, they've hit the gas again....

    Over 48, by Gillespie went 1nb 1lb 6 2 4 4 6 (24 runs)
Hussey was bowled off the no-ball. He stayed.

Last 5 overs Run Rate.... 10.4

    Australia 328/5 in the 49th....

Hussey and Watson at the crease....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    Australia 348/6 after 50 overs

    Australia Run Rate 6.96
    Last 5 overs 66/1 Run Rate 13.20

I just fancy the NZ'ers to have a go, NZ did chase down 350 odd in the Chappell-Hadlee series a few weeks ago iirc.... EDIT: Cricinfo agrees with me.

fleming gone, Styris or Mc Cullum are going to have do something special here. Taylor is trying to play his way back in form he wont last long I feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Taylor, Styris and Mc Millan are gone 80-4 at the moment. Fulton really has to hang about for a while. Franklin moved up the order interesting.

game over another wicket Mc Cullum will have a go but I think they will be lucky to get to 200.:(

New Zealand 133 all out. Australia win by 215 runs.

Doomed I tell you, we're all doomed.

Can't see anyone stopping them now ... the next world cup starts here :D

Yeah the only hope is that they've peaked too early. SL are the only team I can see beating them. They are the only side who have the bowlers to upset the aussie batsmen, ie malinga, vaas, murali. Their bats are a bit hit and miss but if sanath fires they'd have a good chance in the final should they make it. The real weakness in their line up tho is the lack of a big hitter in the latter overs. Australia have symonds and watson among others who can go ballistic.

how is semifinal scheuled, is it 1st by 4th and 2nd by 3rd?
could they have lost on purpose to increase their chances of getting into finals.

i think only SA can beat australia really.

Yeah, NZ v SL on tuesday in jamaica
Aus v SA on wednesday in st lucia

If SA beat them, to say I'd be astonished would be an understatement. The aussies will taunt them with memories of edgbaston but probably wont even need to cos they'll be too strong anyway.

i think this whole "peaking too early" thing is a load of rubbish, you ask any team, in any sport, how would they like to approach and play in a tournament, and i guarantee to you that the answer would always be, they`d like to be winning

these aussies wont be beat now, their just so bloody good, it sickens me, i only like gilchris and Hayden, yet i still want them to go for ducks, that little prick Ponting, i actually think ill vomit when he lifts the trophy

god i hope South Africa knock them off their perch, but chance would be a fine thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I think South Africa are the only team capable of beating them, but they'll have to have one of their on days. As inconsistent as they've been, if their batting line up fires as it can do, then I could see them chasing down a big total. Unlikely, but we can hope.

I don't see anybody restricting the Ozzies to a modest target.

I'd like to see a different country win the World Cup, but frankly unless Sri Lanka pull out a big surprise, the Aussies are already World Champions.

Unremitting excellence can be boring, and while we can't carp at their cricket we try to carp at their attitude or arrogance, but simply, they're the best. It can't be denied.

You simply have to admire, however begrudgingly, their simple pursuit of perfection. Their batsmen play good balls well, and punish bad balls severely. Their bowlers don't bowl bad balls. Their fielding and competitive spirit is the envy of the cricket world.

Teams that win everything are disliked - Liverpool of the 70s and 80s, ManU of the 90s etc. It doesn't mean we can't admire them for their sheer talent and hard brilliance at their craft.

their bowling isnt unreal or anything, i think they just plan it well. Where to place fielders , fielding is perfect and they just make batsman play there and get them. Eg: newzeland match, wasnt many lbw's or bolds. alot of catches.

    batting+fielding = over the top

guy after it, on bbc was saying best way to get them is bat first yourself. which is true england almost had them

I'd agree with you 100% on both counts. For what it's worth, I was bombed when I wrote the above post, had to re-read it today to check what I'd said! :D

maybe, they certainly do love to bat first alright, but the problem is, more than likely, even if south africa win the toss next week, they`ll let the aussies go first, as they love chasing

oh, and truedub, could you pm me some details about taverners cricket please?
