Ish, it really depends on your system. Most will be fine for 2-3 years, but a regas after a year will bring back the "sharpness" to a system. The a/c on my Alfa 156 is a bit marginal to start with, so I tend to have it regassed yearly. On cars with more powerful a/c, i've found that I only need to have it done every few years. Is your system blowing COLD?

Not necessarily. If you notice that the 'chill factor' from the A/C unit is not as effective as before then there is a possibility that it may need regassing. But if it's all working as it should then leave well enough alone........

my aircon, does not blow as cold when I'm in traffic etc compared to say driving on the motorway/openroad. also it was talking longer to demist than normal (when it was demisting weather)

Normally aircon won't be quite as effective when the engine is idling as the compressor is turning over slower as it driven by the engine.

The longer demisting time could be because your pollen filter may need replacing.

That'd be the old R12 which has bigger molecules and won't leak through rubber seals and pipes etc as quickly as R134a.

Speaking of which, I need a small R12 top-up (16 years later). Anyone know anywhere that does it?

R134a can be easily had (Halfords etc), but R12 is rare. And no, I can't/won't convert to R134a, as it'd all leak out of my system in a day.

Your local main dealer should be able to help. Or better still, the dealer may give you the number of a sub-contractor, who invariably will be an A/C specialist.

For those looking for R134a, Halford do cans for €30 to €50 depending on size, and while they won't re-gas a completely empty system, they're fine for topping up the average car.

The big can comes with its own pressure gauge. Not strictly necessary, but slightly useful nonetheless.
