Could my 250cc marauder be restricted?

Hi everyone, first time post here!

I'm a born-again biker, bought a new Suzi Marauder 250cc last year, and I find that the bike struggles to get over 60km/h. Top speed I've ever got is about 65km/h. Thought it might have been me (I wrote off a bike many years ago and would be a tad cautious on the road) but a friend suggested that the bike might have a restrictor fitted.

It shouldn't need one (20bhp and 137kg weight - power/weight ratio of 0.145).....is it possible that it might have? Or is it just new bike syndrome, needing some running in?

I'm not interested in becoming a speed merchant, but would like to take the bike to work (Drogheda - Dublin) which takes far too long right now at 50 - 60 km/h!

    Any suggestions folks? Thanks :)

Year might be wrong and you might have seen the site but here's a spec on the Marauder 250

    http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/suzuki_gz_250_marauder_1999.php

Says you should be able to push past 100kph mark under normal conditions

Technically it is possible, but out in the real world no chance its restricted.
50kmph= 30mph all the way drogheda to dublin .... ouch
    When was last service?

yeah that doesnt sound right at all, my gf's marauder is a nippy (well it will do 100kph) little thing

did you buy it second hand or from a garage?

I drove a Marauder 125 (stop laughing :( ) as my first bike. Even with my hulking great mass on it I still managed to get up to 72mph :D . Although at that speed I had Scotty wispering in my ear telling me "she canny take it captain" .

That speed is about 3rd gear/4th gear on that 250, is she shifting up to 5th? Maybe there's a problem in your gearbox, or in the throttle control, it could be pinching somewhere and not opening fully. Have you checked your air filter is clean and that there's no obstructions in to the air injection? You could be suffering from starvation, but it would have to be damned bad to slow it down that much.

I ride a 125 maurader and can easily hit 100kmph so i think there is definitely a problem with your 250.

could be carbs blocked or a dirty airfilter

Thanks for all your replies - so it's not just my driving then!

To answer a few of the questions - the bike was bought brand new in April 2006 from a very reputable dealer (Mountjoy Motorcycles).

It hasn't given me any trouble apart from the lack of power/speed.
It's due for its first service now (only 1000km on the clock) which is one of the reasons I wondered what might be up - so I can ask the right questions of the garage!

Yep, Drawda - Dublin at 50km/h is a pain in the proverbial, just as well I've got padded gear!!

And I'd never laugh at a 125cc rider...I started my biking career on a Kawasaki KC100 (giving my age away here!) and at one stage owned and drove the esteemed Honda 50cc!

I'll let ye know how I got on, thanks again, great bunch of people :D

If the garage tell you it's none of the above..i'd say it might need to be just run in properly. 1000km on the clock is pretty new
