My 4-buyin rollercoaster plan to the WSOP

I really would love to go to Vegas for the WSOP of poker this year, it has been a dream of mine to go shortly after I started to learn NLHE 18 months ago. I have come up with a plan while driving from Cork to Dublin today that I am going to start with a 4-buyin at 0.5/1 NL 9-table max on Poker Stars. I have some rules which is really my bankroll management. They are:
I must always have at least 2 buyins for the level I am at which are not at the table.
When I only have 2-buyins I drop down a level.
I will play until I reach achieve 4 buyins for 20-40NL
Become tigther as I move up levels.
    Rules subject to change!

I do realise that this will get very difficult with a very steep learning curve as I move up levels, but I am basically looking at it as a tournament where I move up levels as the blinds go up except I can't go bust completely. I will keep this thread updated with some interesting hands that I come across and pokertracker graphs as well.

My pokerstars SN is pauricm for anyone interested

    So it begins here....

Will I be in Vegas this summer for the WSOP? 14 votes

We are all desperately realistic arent we.

Good luck with this digiman, I think its a big ask but if you are running good who knows.

    Prove us naysayers wrong.

edit: Prove us wrong or come up with a new strategy that is.

If you are completely honest with your bankroll and strategy then I'm afraid not. If you go bust, reload, jump up levels for the crack, then you'd never know, you might get lucky.

The very best of luck anyway. Looking forward to reading the updates.

So off to a bad start, I lose one buyin after 5 mins so I stick to my rule and just play out the other table, I was playing very aggresive and picking up alot of flops on the flop with c-bets. I got involved in a 3 hands with one very bad player in particular. He limps every hand and just checks calls the flop turn river each time. 2 hands with him:
Table 'Simonida' 9-max Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: pauricm ($165.60 in chips)
    Seat 2: pippin31 ($56.35 in chips)

I just call the river here incase he was playing the A high flush.

Then on my last round of the table I raise UTG with 89s and well I guess I knew what I was up against when he went allin but I was never folding at this stage:

Bankroll now at 340. I made 50 back after 1 donkey play was rewarded when I called an allin on the turn with an openender and I hit on the river :D .
When I play again I will play 2 tables with 70 each I think. I think this is better than playing 1 with a full buyin because if I go bust then I will have to move down levels which is not what I want to do so soon.

I don't mean to sound mean but I cracked up that follow up first sentence.

Although I don't think that it's remotely realistic I would say that since you are attempting it - play somewhere other than Pokerstars (they have the best cash game players at those kind of stakes), don't play full ring - the idea that you can grind that kind of cash out by playing correctly is madness, so play 6 handed and be an uber aggressive nutcase. Think Bluescouse's and Sweden's bastard lovechild. Also as Marq would say: move up levels, jump right in at 3/6 and give it a whirl or it'll be WSOP 2008 by the time you grind it out. Oh, and the become tighter as you move up levels is the opposite of what you should be doing.

Best of luck with it, although frankly stopping when you get to $650 and playing a supersatellite has a far greater expectation.

Stars are doing a great little 24$ tourney. It's 36 players max. 6 tables of 6, double shootout. First is a ticket into the 650$ game hotspur was talking about, 2nd is 80$ and 3rd 62$ not a bad little tournament!

Only problem is it takes a while to fill up!

I have seen a lot of people advise me on this but I think it is soft enough 9-handed to be honest. Very easy to play preflop, reraises get through a lot and the flop isn't to bad either. I have played a bit in the last week or so at this level before I started this and was playing well enough at it.
I have been raising with a lot with suited connectors and broadway cards. I rarely ever play anything less ATo, mainly raising with potential hands and it has been working well.
I have also been re-raising the button from 4-12 a lot with ATC and most of these have been paying off, enough anyway to make it profitable, I have seen a few people come back over my raises, the better players do it most of the time, depending on position I will 4-bet here as well. I have had AA and KK quite a few times and raised preflop and the whole table will fold. The amount of times you raise UTG from 1-3 and the whole table folds is unbelievable.

Anyway bankroll is up for the first time now, currently standing at the handsome profit of $3.05 so only 396.95 before I attack 1-2!!

    play 6max.

gl with it anyway, I think trying sat in would be a better option tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

    play 6max.

Why do you say this? I played 6 max nearly all the time for the last year thinking it was better, but I tried 9max very recently and have been doing well at it. I think its much easier to know where you are in a hand because peoples range is generally alot tigher and I am still playing like I am at 6max which I am trying to use as an advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

    so u don't fall asleep!

winrate 6max should be >>>> than wr at full ring. assuming you've an edge.

plus u get more hands in, so u win more even quicker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

A good day 2, havn't played all that much so far, but on a good up turn from day 1. Im raising most pots I play and taking a lot of them down on the flop. Won a huge pot earlier when I was all in on the flop with an outside str draw and hit on the river!!
I posted up my stats so far, probably not much to go on with so little hands but any advice greatly apprecieted. UTG looks shocking so far but that is the mainly due to the hand last night where I posted above when I got beat by a bigger house.
I am thinking about maybe changing the rules a bit, by making it 5 buyins to move up levels and needing 3 buyins to stay at a level. But I will see how it goes, of course the big problem is I never played bigger than 0.5/1 seriously before, I have only dipped into it when running well or drunk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

your position stats are really weird. isn't position way more important in fr than 6max?

    meh, it's only 400 hands i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

Yes, I know. I have been raising a lot from my SB and BB 3-5BB with ATC and picking up the pots there. I also like to be first to act on the flop as I like putting pressure on players and being the aggressor, usually only when the flop looks bad or if I hit the flop either in any way at all

runs like this can happen but rarely do. iyour swings are gonna be crazy. if you do get into the 1000s because youll have to play like a maniac your downswings are gonna be just as huge. i dont think you have a chance. as your stepping up your gonna lose any edge you had if any.

so how are you getting on with this
Another huge swing today, was up to 7 buyins at 0.5/1 and back down to 3 buyins again. I was playing terrible as well once i got down below 5 buyins and went on tilt as well. I had to stop before I done anymore damage. Had one sick hand earlier which I really should have been able to fold put pushed instead and was down to a 1 outer after the flop after my set ran into a higher set which ran into a flopped straight. looking back it should have been an easy fold as the really had to be a set there, I didnt really consider the straight. whya er you letting yourself get to 7 buyins?

What I mean is 7 buyins for 0.5/1, so I need 8 at my current level before I will have 4 for the next level which would be 1/2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

I have been very un-active over the last few days, since my last post I didn't have the full buyin for .5/1 so I just bought in short and also played at .25/.5 for a while so playing 2 levels at the same time, not a great idea as I called big raises in the .25/.5 thinking there were standard in the .5/1 and got caught out but soon adjusted and has been doing ok since. Im still down a small bit at .5/1 and up a reasonable amount on .25/.5
Tomorrow I plan on steping things up a bit and trying to get in a 1k hands tomorrow as I have the day off work and see how things go there. I really need to be hitting 1/2 soon if I have any chance of trying to make this work as the WSOP is only 3 months away or even less maybe. I really should be moving up these levels where I am comfortable at quicker as once I go outside my comfort zone I will probably slow down a lot, just natural I guess

So my latest pokertracker stats are:

Looks like I will be needing this, played like a donk all day today when playing cash, i have to move down levels now, BR at 184.50.

On the positive side I did qualify for the $650 game on Sunday in 2 different satellites, started of in a $4 rebuy (spent $16) into the $80 tourney which I came 2nd in, played really well in that.
So as many of you said before at the minute sats could be the best option if I want to go to Vegas this summer.
Going to grind it out at .25/.5 now for a while again, im so sick about that but I will try and stick to the plan.

KQ is a tough fold here preflop I think when its your BB. I had obviously seen all the action at this table and I myself was raising with garbage every few hands stealing blinds when on the bubble and last 2 so KQ here would be ahead here alot of the time. There was something like $12 for 4th btw!!!! I will say later what happened, pretty sick as you can imagine when I posted this
