    Hey all,

I typed in www.google.com into the URL and it went to google.de, Never happened before just today. Thought it may be Mozilla so I hopped into IE with the same result,

Am i on my own here?

Have you got Google Toolbar? I know you can set which country it logs onto there.

Are you going through a proxy server? If the proxy server is in Germany, google will go to google.de

I bet you've got satellite broadband. Most of those services are German-based. Google sees your IP address and thinks you're in Germany, so presents you with google.de.

    Happened on my system too.

Either the irish version of google went down unexpectedly and it just shunted everyone over to .de

    Or

There was a problem with a dns server along the way.

    It's fixed itself now anyway.

Try clearing your cookies. It might have saved the German version as a preference.

I deleted cookies and reset my homepage as google.com but it keeps comming up google.de.

Firefox startpage is the same. German.

Hopefully it will go away soon.

EDIT: I switched my router off for a couple of minutes and when i turned it back on i was back on the English version of Google.

    Whats that about?

odd... that used to happen in college alright, you'd end up on the danish google every now and then (but that was through a proxy thingy)

However, if i type www.google.com into address bar it'll go to google.ie BUT if i just type google it'll go to google.co.uk.... And if i do that in work it just goes to google.com

    Weird..

Same thing is happening to me right now very weird it seems to be the built in Google search in Firefox is redirecting to Google Germany.

Hopefully whatever is the cause will clear itself.

I just checked and it's happening with IE7 as well.

It has a special Earthday look today...http://www.google.de/

Mine is beinging directed to the german version again. I wouldnt think too much of it if it were not for the fact that my download speed is really bad and am wondering if it's connected somehow.

    Not happening me anyways!

As a temporary fix for Firefox users at least (not sure about IE7 may work) go to Mycroft & these are the search results for Google.

Scroll down to section 20 and click "Google No Country Redirect" by Mycroft Project and it will ask to add to your list do so and make default tada no more Google Germany.

As google.com normally redirects non-US users to a country-specific site based on their IP address, I'd guess there is an Eircom netblock incorrectly associated with Germany. This might be a block reallocated to Eircom that was previously used in Germany.

Anyone care to post the IP address they had when they saw this problem?

That'd be my guess as well. I'm not sure whether they use a database of netblocks, or reverse DNS lookups. I say this because it quite often happens that Eircom 'forget' to add reverse DNS records for some considerable time after they've allocated a new block of IP addresses. That's given me some problems in the past with sites that use this method to establish where you're from, and the only way out is to keep disconnecting and reconnecting your modem until you get an address in an older range.

Yeah that is the problem. Happened to the family computer at some point.

The easiest fix is actually to go to the German page, change the .de in the URL address to ie and set that as your homepage.
