When you connect you dvd/cd player you have the 4 hole power connection but you also have a 39 pin female connection which connects to the motherboard. In between the 2 connections there is a flat wide plastic thingie covering the wires....Whats the name anyone??

So thats the piece, i assume that there all standard size?? So wheres a good online place to buy or even somewhere i can pay by credit card over the phone and get it delivered. No point me gooogling if i dont know the name.

Im in Athlone so the computer stores here dont seem to deal in them:mad:

What kind of computer stores don't have IDE cables?! Is below what you are looking for? That is an IDE cable, Peats or Komplett.ie should have them.

Yeah, it's just a standard IDE cable, the exact same thing used to connect a hard drive to your motherboard as well*. They're quite similar to the smaller floppy disk drive connectors, so make sure you don't confuse them.

Standard IDE cables have 40 conductors. High speed hard drives (any modern hard drive) require 80-conductor IDE cables to operate at full speed, but CD/DVD drives are much slower, and so they can use both 40 and 80 conductor ribbon cables with no problems.

*This probably doesn't apply to you, but note that all the above is for Parallel ATA (PATA) drives only. Most hard disks these days use the much smaller Serial ATA (SATA) connectors, and many DVD drives are starting to use them as well, but your motherboard may not support them if it's old.
