My missus just went to my usual dentist; he charged €150 for a white filling, €30 of which was paid by PRSI. This seems very dear to me; what has anyone here paid for a white filling lately?

    Thanks,

    P.

My own guy charges exactly half that (€75) and he's hasn't a reputation for being cheap!

Perhaps your wife's filling was a little more complicated and needed a lot more time to complete?

i asked my dentist about this and he said that a white filling takes on average 3 times as long to place , the materials are more expensive and it is more difficult for patient and dentist as tooth has to be kept completely dry during proceedure, hard to do at back of mouth, so i was happy to pay

I had my first filling two weeks ago and it was €60 and that was for a white one. It's very well done - really not noticeable at all. Went to a dentist in Walkinstown on recommendation. Very happy with it :)

    Bit of a hijack, sorry.

What's a good rate for a filling? White or regular. I need quite a few:(

Hi, need some dental work done, out of interest, roughly what would the difference in price be, between the north and south for normal work ie fillings etc and then cosmetic dentistry, we talking half the price etc? im located in Dublin, thanks

It depends on what tooth. Back teeth cost more, and take much longer.

I work as a dentist, and some people I know have charged up to 450 euro for white fillings on back teeth.

Front teeth are very straight forward, though.

had to get a few fillings recently, 2 at the back were approx 80 each (not white), and a white one near the front was 120. thiis was in cork...

indeed, even in the uk some in aesthetic practices in the south charge 250 sterling for large white fillings done as a crown alternative(where the patient cannot afford a lab fabricated crown or onlay under full moisture isolation which is 375 euro, however the job is top notch with several shade blends and well worth the money imho. howeve value is all relative, it is not like buying a car or house, its a service not a product. if done badly one could easily need a root canal, or extraction and implant and then the life maintainance costs of these options..

I went to the dentist for the first time in over 5 years recently, went to a guy recommended by a friend.

At the checkup I was told I needed 4 fillings --(1 Amal and 3 comp) and was also told to floss more....

anyway while flossing a week later I pulled out a filling (one that needed to be replaced anyway and had been warned it may need a root canal) -- Anyway I rang dentist to get it done immediately, but no one was available-- The receptionist recommended I go elsewhere

Following day I went to new dentist and had a white filling put in -- 75 Euro--he said it was only a small thing and the tooth was otherwise ok

Few weeks later I went back to first dentist to continue with the other fillings all happy with myself that I had 1 of the 4 done.

He couldnt believe it was a new filling and said there was still decay arround it and it would need to be replaced-- He filled it today and said it was a deep cavity and that though the tooth was still alive it was at risk -- This white Filling cost 160 Euro

235 Euro later the filling surface seems very rough and sharp at the back, so cannot wait to see if it needs to be done again!!

no pain though so thats something---not that the tooth ever hurt before

Quoted today €110 for a front white filling with a new dentist, been like this for a long time now and my old dentist never mentioned it 6 months ago, also mentioned other work needs doing.
Why do opinions differ so much, are there different schools of thought, I thought exactly what needs doing would be cut and dried:confused: ,

ask your dentist why he recommends replacement if you are concerned. many times fillings are replaced for esthetics, other times its because the tooth is decaying or might decay becase a little bit has fallen away or the seal is failing.
there indeed are different schools of thought. the only thing that is mandatory is removal of infection, ie decay or gum disease or dead nerves etc and replacement with something or extraction. everything else is related to ideals like function, esthetics, strength, cost, risk of future decay/gum disease willingness of a patient to undergo something et, risks, training of dentist and depends on numerous factors like what weighting is put on each. esentially though what constitutes ideal are accepted by nearly every dentist the only debate is on the above points. hope that helps.

135 per filling in dundrum health center ( top of dundrum shopping center).
i get 30 quid back on each filling. havnt been in about 6 years so had to get 7 fillings. total, you guessed it, 700 quid. a lot to pay out in a month.

my bro is in college in scotland. he just paid 16 pounds per filling and got 3 fillings done. something wrong over here i think

My right upper 5 is essentially 60% filling/restoration.

Initially it was an amalgam, but then my dentist noticed leakage about four years ago and replaced it with composite (white) filling.

He said at the time that it would probably be ok for a number of years, but that I'd eventually need a crown because of the size.

Now the composite surface area has shrunk/been eroded (I'm a night-grinder) leaving the outer walls of the tooth particularly vulnerable to breakage.

Hopefully I'll be going to get a crown on it soon and am currently avoiding chewing on that side, but I think getting big substantial white fillings on yer back molars should be avoided as problems such as mine can occur.

one of my back teeth had a crack in it that the dentist didnt notice before the first filling. got a temp filling today (40 quid) to cover some compount to fix the crack, until a new permanent filling is applied next week prob abother 100 quid. all in all just under 900 quid on fillings in 2 months!!! and i cant claim back on them as they are classed as "standard dental work". i Fracking hate this country.

    how much is a filling?
depends on the size/difficulty and visibility.£16 a filling? what a joke, that wouldn't cover the cost of a nurse for a big filling. Cheap is Cheap for a reason

here are some simple composite fillings, only on one surface of the tooth.quick and easy to place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,127 ✭✭✭BryanL

This is a 2 surface filling.Larger, takes a fair bit more time to place and is at greater risk of breaking in the future because of it's size and depth.More materials have to be used to protect the nerve and for bonding below the gum.
the previous had broken(without the patient knowing) and was lose, but retained by the pin(screw like object you can see)
again a crown or onlay would be a better option. But the patient didn't feel they had any problem and were slow to let me replace the filling, even with the photo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,127 ✭✭✭BryanL

    next up a 3 surface filling,but with a crack!
so this patient came for a normal exam,no problems, but said this tooth was sometimes a little sore to bite on.Again an onlay/crown would be best. Their is a reasonably high risk they will have issues with the nerve in the future.(refused rubber dam)
so how much for this filling? well how deep is the crack?can we even keep the tooth and how is the nerve going to respong.
    1)so first the tooth
2)then a light to show there is a crack present
3)then remove filling to see decay and crack(small white line at the base, running the whole way through
4)remove the crack, clean everything, the nerve is living just below the central brown stain!) reduce the height of the tooth on the left as it has little support
    5) place and shape and polish the filling to a reasonable shade, check the bite and profile of the tooth

last but not least,4 sides of this tooth are missing and it's decayed, again no pain or problems for the patients point of view.
very cynical if it needed to be done and when i mentioned a crown was a better but more expensive option, well i got the usual you are a thief look.
then my favorite question, would it be cheaper to get this done in Poland? Yes i'm almost certain it would:confused:

Composites (white filling) vary in price according to size and where in the mouth. I work in dental practice in Cork and prices here can up to 110 euro for composite, so for Dublin, sorry to say, she probably did ok!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 Feebles

You'll find on average that prices for dental treatment in Dublin are between one third to half times DEARER than down South. I know, I work in dental practice here in Cork and I have 2 sisters in Dublin!! They now come down to us for their dental treatment!

The prices people here pay are absolutely insane. My dentist charges €40 for a white filling if you have the PRSI. You can send me a private message for her details if you want. I won't post the information here.

If you could tell me where this dentist is I would really appreciate it, as I have a whopping 6 fillings to get!!

I have recently gone to the dentist in Donabate, but found them extremely over priced...€150 for one white filling!
