Palpitations and trouble sleeping

I have had minor palpitations now for about 5 yrs now, but only recently they are litteraly getting worse and taking over my life and my moods.

I try to get asleep at around 11pm most nights, however I would be lucky to actually GET asleep before 3am. When my head hits the pillow and i begin to relax my heart stops and starts, races, pumps and so on. I am becoming so used to them now, that I know exactly what lies ahead of me when i try to go asleep. The only time I DONT get them is when I have a few drinks on me...

Lately however I am getting a huge shock whereby my whole upper body jolts up, im clutching my chest and the area from my neck down to my belly feels numb. I am convinced its not 'just' palpitations, im convinced I have a heart condition. Before anyone says it I AM going to the doctor but I am terrified at the same time. My father died at age 44 of a heart attack (but always had heart problems) so it is inevitable it could be hereditrey (sp).

The amount of sites I have gone onto re palpitations, they ALL say it is nothing to worry about and is very common. Im not so sure. They also say they can happen to the healthiest of hearts.

I am a 27 year old female, I smoke (this could be a factor), Just broke up with my boyfriend (under a lot of stress), and I occasionally take drugs (4/5 times a year). Havent touched them in about 9 months though.

I am convinced I am just not going to wake up one morning. I am worried the Doc will dismiss this as 'just' palpitations, and tell me not to worry?

This is not a medical forum and we cannot help you with regards to this.
Go to the doctor and discuss this with him, if he's not helpful, go to another one.
