[Req] Looking to buy a second hand scooter

    Hi All,

I currently commute to work in Dublin on a 49cc MBK Ovetto. I find this very restrictive as it’s slow and I can’t (legally) use the M50. I’m looking to upgrade to a higher powered scooter, one that could take me up to speeds of 70 mph. I know very little about scooters and my main queries are the following:

1 Can anyone recommend a make and model, reasonably new, that would fall into the €1,000 to €2,000 price range (second hand)

2 Can anyone recommend a make and model for which 2nd hand parts are fairly easy to come across. (or alternatively is there any model that 2nd hand parts are a nightmare to come across and so should be avoided.)

These might be tricky questions, but I appreciate all responses, even if they don’t fully answer my question.

    Thanks in Advance

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yamaha YP125 Majesty. Suzuki Burgman 125.

Im sure you already know this... but if your bike licence is provisional your not really supposed to be on the motorway either.

KatieK - I know that applies to A1 licences. Does that apply to Prov A, too?

However, I'm thinking that if, say, you were 30+, you could drive a 500cc machine on a provisional (less than 0.16kg/bhp rule), but would you be allowed on the motorway, licence-wise?

    From this site:http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/motoring-1/driver-licensing/provisional_driving_licence/?searchterm=provisional%20licence%20motorway
If you hold a provisonal driving licence, you can't drive a vehicle drawing a trailer, drive on a motorway, act as an accompanying driver or carry other people for reward.

There are no Provisional licences allowed on motorways.

WTF! You have got to be kidding right?

First off, your age does not matter when you are on a prov license. You restricted to the power outputs by that grade of license. You are not meant to be on the motorway, but everyone does it anyway. Galwaytt, please, please go read the rules of the road!

First, you can drive any size of bike on a provisional A, so long as it's below the 0.16 Kw/kg ratio, it's not the power output per se. I put in the age to clarify NOT an A1, i.e. 16 yr old.......this means you can ride my AA500 or H-D 1450 on a provisional, if you want to.

I was merely exploring the often ambiguous laws of the land to see if it could be done. And, as you said, everyone's doing it anyway.

    Hi GalwayTT,

I see you have an Aprilia Atlantic 500 (AA500)? I just put a deposit on a '02 model.
    I had a CB500 upto a month ago (stolen).
The Atlantic feels very different (obviously), but thought I'd take a chance.
My insurance won't cover me for theft from my apt., so I don't want to spend more than €2K.
I'm over thirty and came to bikes only in the last three years. Some of my 'advisors' reckon it's a step in the wrong direction, but your threads suggest you have experience of big CC bikes and still rate the AA - I doubt any of them have ever rode one?

I toured the CB from Dublin to Limerick, Cork, Galway, and weekly up and down to Carrick on Shannon for the past two Summers (April to October).
I'd like to do the same with the new ride.
Am I right to proceed with the Atlantic, or should I keep looking?

There is a power output restriction for provisional A licence holders - under 33bHP. I know there's great debate in other threads whether the OR in the rules (under 33bHP or power/weight below 0.16) means either one or other or both restrictions.
