SE scalps last night. Bout 34 players left from 51. Ive just moved to this table so have absolutley no reads. Myself and the villain are the two big stacks on the table and well cover everyone else.

    Me 22,000
    SB Covers

    Blinds 200/400

I limp after an EP limper with 89s and the SB and BB come along.

    Flop 4 8 8 two clubs.

SB leads for 1600 folded to me and i make it 4600 to go. He immediatley pushes.

    Action?

Is it the Yeti Theorem that a 3-bet on a paired board is generally a bluff.

    Call. Fast.

he just explained it! it was originally posted as a joke but it turns out to be pretty true. I think it was more concerned with raised pots but i can't really remember.

    LOL, Very true.

I think at low/mid stakes it generally holds true though. Most players still tend to play big hands slower.

Who is the villain? Does he say or do anything before he ships?

As you know, you will find a lot of Dublin tourney players who will push AcXc // any 8 // any overpair (and they might slowplay JJ - AA pre in an effort to trap you and then stick it all in anyway when it looks like they are beat).

    Similiarly, he might sometimes turn over a better 8 // 44 // 84.

I would need to hear something very specific in response to my two questions to seriously consider folding this.
The guys name is Oz i think. hes an american working for full tilt. When he pushed he just sat back and looked very comfortable. I completley ruled out an overpair as i thought he would raise with two limpers in preflop. when he bet out on the flop with 3 behind i felt he was strong.

there are alot of hands that beat me and the only real hand i could beat was a flushdraw so I folded but instantly regretted it. Im still not sure if i was right or not though!!!! Annoying!

    I call very quickly.
Really? I had absolutley no history with him and he just looked comfortable so I couldnt do it. Why do you say that? is he loosey goosey?

yeh thats him allright. Probabley was a flush draw but weighing up the fact that i COULD be in big trouble and the fact that i was still very comfortable in chips led me too fold. are these reasonable excuses or am just too weak here?

never folding this either, i'd need to have ninja like reads on him to do so.

Oz has recently started posting on here as Oz-Poker so maybe he will come on and reveal all. He is a very nice chap to play with at the tables, always very courteous and pleasent. A good winner and a good loser.

I call here everytime btw, I put up a HH like this before from a IPC satellite and the resounding response was that I am almost never behind in this situation. Put yourself in the villians shoes? Do you really expect him to push back at you with an 8? What would you do? Try and extract maximum value? Pushing in this spot is not extracting value from your hands - unless he is suffering from MUTBS and is concerned that you are on a flushdraw and he is therfore protecting his 8 and his stack. He almost never has 44 or 84 here in this spot so your only concern is that he has you outkicked.

I think your justification for folding is very weak also "could be in trouble and you have plenty of chips" - this is not sound rational for folding. Also, you have limped 89 from EP and hit the flop just about as hard as you could have hoped and still folded. Why play preflop if your gonna fold the flop? Leaking!!

Hey BCB it was actually the CO i limped from so hardly EP. I know it was weak in hindsight and i should have called I just didnt like the way he looked and with absolutley no history with him I couldnt make the call. C'est la vie!!!! You guys have all played with him so makes it easier for you to judge you know?

I am lead to believe that Oz had 78 in this hand.

just to make you feel better eoghan

    yeh so I believe. Gay.

OK - I'll kill all the suspense.

I had 87 (as I reported to Mick that evening who must have told BCB), expecting to have the best hand and be called lightly. When eoghan folded and showed an 8, I was actually surprised.

Just as eoghan didn't know my game, I didn't know his. I've done very well against unknown players betting my flopped trips strongly and I was hoping to be called by an overpair by making a lead bet and weak looking jam.

The fact that I got a better hand to fold shows the power of my strategy. :) All kidding aside, eoghan was in a really tough spot, and, without any other information, I think I'd fold in his position also. I've been burned by weak kickers in these spots too often (and narrowly avoided it in this case).

Thanks for that Oz and well played.

Theres nothing wrong with fold, he correctly read him for an 8 and since most 8's beat him he folded

By the way nice to meet you oz, im the guy you traded chips with at the start of the tournament last week and then knocked you out on the FT with AA, unfortunately I ended up knocking myself out a few hands later

Hi HJ - Mick pointed you out to me that evening, so I knew who you were even though you didn't know me.

The hand you refer to is burned into my brain because the mistake I made was being too tired at the final table. Upon reflection, I think I had the information needed not to try that particular dunderheaded play against you and I was really upset that I broke one of my big rules, to wit, don't play in a tourney when you will not be at your best at the FT. I was tired when the tourney started and I paid for it on that hand.

Anyway, nice to meet you too, and I'm looking forward to our future battles. :)

    -Oz-
