Under the Road Traffic Act 2006, the Government has put in place a number of measures through road traffic legislation. Further measures have been introduced since early March which include an extension to the disqualification periods for drink driving. These measures include:

    * Drink driving offences now carry disqualification periods that range from 1 to 6 years depending on the level of alcohol detected, and whether it is a first or subsequent offence (this had ranged of 3 months to 4 years).
    * The offence of refusing to provide a sample of blood, urine or breath for evidential purposes, now attracts an automatic disqualification of 4 years for a first offence, (previously 2 years), and 6 years for a second or subsequent offence (previously 4 years).
    * The minimum disqualification for so-called "hit and run" offences and dangerous driving is 4 years for a first offence (had been 2 years) for those tried on indictment; and 6 years for a subsequent offence (previously 4 years).
    * A person who is detected while he or she is disqualified from driving and a person who uses a vehicle without an NCT certificate will now face a disqualification of at least 1 year; and
    * Disqualifications will now apply to all first time convictions for dangerous driving, tried summarily.

Any news on whether the 2007 Act (easy conversion to motorways) is gonna happen before the Dail dissolves for the election??

A person who is detected while he or she is disqualified from driving ... will now face a disqualification of at least 1 year

More toothlessness. What makes them think that someone who's already driving while banned, gives a crap about getting another year added to their disqualification? What is the political stigma regarding heavy fines and jail terms in this country? They seem determined to not actually punish people.

If people can't drive then there is no reason to own a car. The motor industry has a powerful political lobby in this country.
