Hard Disk Data Recovery In The West?

    Hi All
Recently dropped my hard disk on the ground while changing it from one PC to another. Connected it up and unsurprisingly, it wont boot up. Im afraid the mechanics of the drive are damaged, but Im hoping the data can be recovered. Anyone know of any data recovery company in the west, and if you have data recovered before, how much did you pay? I got a quote from a Dublin company for 700+ Euro. Does this seem very high?
    Any help would be appreciated!

Get your self a couple of freezer bags and then pop it in the freezer for a few hours and then while its frozen try and boot, it may work for a few mins which maybe just enough time to recover your files. But alas it may have suffered severe damage but its worth a shot.

i think that quote you got seems fair. I read somebody getting a similar quote on another site.

Ya thats what I was thinkin - when you evaluate 4 years of stuff (which was never backed up!!) to 700 euros, it seems a fair enough price - but im just thinkin do these companies know how valuable data can be, and are just plucking a figure out of the air?
Ive only got one quote so far, a friend in england got his disk recovered for about 200 euro less, but im not sure about sending it overseas.

This suggestion should always come with a health warning that it's only worth doing if you don't consider professional data recovery to be a worthwhile investment. I've used successfully myself on more than one occasion but I'd only suggest it as a last resort.

Also, as the OP dropped the disk I would doubt that this would work - it's normally used in situations where older drives are suffering from thermal expansion problems.

I think that 700+ sounds quite reasonable for a professional data recovery company. Bear in mind that this has to be done by experienced people in a cleanroom environment.

Thanks for that Leeroy, I see youre based in Galway, so are you aware of any companies in the West that do data recovery?

I don't know of any offhand. Thankfully backups have saved me from needing to pay for data recovery thus far.

Be careful that the €700 you were quoted is not just an initial quote. We regularly use a clean room in Dublin to recover disks (our users suffer from 'dropsy' and an unwillingness to backup) and have paid anywhere from €800 to €3,500, depending on the amount of damage done and the amount of data to be recovered.
