[Eve] Just started Eve...

So I finally started my 14 day trial of Eve last week, so far its been very interesting.

First I created a Caldari industrialist guy but I soon found my main goal at any given time seemed to be 'get a bigger ship' and my skills weren't geared towards that at all, so I've rerolled a Gallente soldier with lots of ship flying skills and have focussed on doing Agent missions, but long term I think I still want to do industry type stuff.

Thanks to having strong ship flying starting skills, and getting some money from a friend in game, I got myself an Incursus first then a destroyer within a few days so the missions are going nicely.

Not sure what else I should be doing right now though. I'm fairly sure I'll be killed pretty damn quickly if I try leaving secure space, and I don't have any mining or building skills, so at the mo it seems like a threadmill of doing agent missions. If anything there's just too many choices and I've no idea what I should be doing with my time! I think my problem is I want to do a bit of everything but suppose I should settle on some kind of specialisation...

Tis a big game ill say that. Join the irish room to get a bit more advice and help while in game. Go to channels & mailing lists and click "create/join" button and type in "irish" . Most of the lads in their are pvp oriented but alot have done missions or industry stuff so they can answer your questions. Make sure you don't just train for the next biggest ship, there are skills out there to improve your weapons damage, range and your ships 'tank' and speed etc. So ask in rookie chat or irish room or even local. :D

Playing Eve like its just another MMO is going to make it boring pretty quick. I used to think getting the next big ship was like leveling up, but its really not. I'm now of the opinion that you can have a lot more fun mastering, or just getting very good at the smaller ships first.

Also, mining and missions are good money makers in this game when you're starting, but keep in mind this is a PvP based game, and its out in low-sec and 0.0 where the real fun is had ;)

Heh cool I'll keep that in mind, I'll wait a little bit till I have some savings in the bank before I do too much, I'm not playing heavily yet anyway because I've other things on my plate, mainly training up skills ahead of Summer.

A question though, how much life is there anticipated to be left in the game? It's been running for about 3 years and I know how long it takes to really build up your character in games like this, so I'd hate to think the game will be winding down and people will be quitting just as I'm getting into it.

Back at the start of 2006 the average amount of players you would see connected to the server was about 17,000. Since then this has raised to above 25,000 and according to CCP they are getting more new subscriptions now then ever before. There are a LOT of new players around these days so the server isn't going to empty any time soon.

Also take into account that this whole server is player controlled. From the game's map territories to the economy, items, equipment, ships, everything is under the control of the players. I think this is why the game is going so long and is getting bigger, alot of players helped build this game up from the begining and are unlikely to simply abbandon it.

Another thing to take account of is the game's story line. Its not REALLY a big thing in Eve, but its still there. Only recently the drone regions opened up to the public, and the Jove regions are still to be unlocked. The devs are about to introduce walking in stations, and have tons of other plans for the future of the game.

There is a whole bunch of gunnery skills you should level up first, they will be revlevant regardless of your ship size.
