Began training (Muso Shinden Ryu) with Japanese long sword (daito), both laito (real sword) and bokuto (wooden practice) about a year ago. Looking for a teacher (Uchi-dachi) registered with EIF for summer 2007. Have family I can stay with in Dub and Galway. Not interested in Kendo, but rather a teacher with a good balance between moving meditation (Seitei-gata iaido) and kill on the draw (Iaijutsu).

You should maybe ask on www.dublinkendo.com although I wouldn't put it so directly about not being interested in Kendo, but someone there might be in the know.

Btw, I'm starting Kendo this Sunday.

i think you'll find Iaido in Dublin, not sure how different that is to Iadojitsu. Maybe a bit less choppy in halfy.

Hi! Talking about "choppy!" Drew first blood. Mine! Got 5 stitches with my daito doing iaijutsu. It's cutting polish hamon. So sharp I didn't feel it!

were you wearing chain mail gloves or similar? I think anything involving a sharp blade is WAY too dangerous for messing around with. Different strokes for different folks though :)

Thanks for the humour! Cut doing kata. You guessed it. Hand cut. Looks like I'll have a hairline scar. Hey, I thought dueling scars were "in" once? I could fudge and not bother telling anyone it was solo kata (and avoid looking foolish)?

"shinden muso ireland" + google gets you a few places to start.

Surely your SMR teacher has contacts in Ireland, UK, or Europe?

Best of luck and mind those thumbs!

Hi! My teacher is insular Japanese and old enough to be my grandpa. Semi-retired with just a handful of students, all male except me. Oh, he is very fit and fast, but you would never know it to look at him from a distance. Anyway, I already asked him. He didn't know anyone in Ireland. I guess I could access the EIF (European Iaido Federation) and ask them too, but was hoping for a referral by someone with personal experience of someone's teaching. Thanks for the post.

Fair enough Blue. Those Irish iaido folks are your best bet anyway. Bujinkan does kenjutsu and iaijutsu but probably not in the form you'd be accustomed too plus it's probably not helpful to mix sword styles over short periods.

Let us know how you get on anyway.
