Internet problems

Recently I lost the use of my phone line for several days due to a storm in the area. I contacted the phone company who promply fixed the fault and I got my phone back. However, I cannot get into the internet ever since. When I try dialling up the following error appear 'Make sure modem is connected to the phone line'. Everything seems fince with cables and connections.

    Has anyone any ideas?

    Thanks

Check the diagnostics in Phone and Modem options in Control Panel, make sure you are getting a response.

    Unfortunately where I am, I don't have a choice. :(

Eircom are my isp but I don't pay my bills to them.

If your phone line got knocked out during a storm and your PC was connected to phone socket at the time the chances of the modem being fried are pretty high. Check the diagnostics as Ruu suggests and if you get no response you need to replace modem.

yeah i would bet money its the modem. i usually use hyperterminal to test dialling out from a modem, i just ring my own mobile number. but as irlrobins said, odds of your modem being fried are really high.
