Leathers vs armoured jeans

    Hi Guys!

There was a thread on armoured jeans (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055071694). I looked up the web myself and the links from the thread and must admit that I'm not too convinced that the jeans would protect me better than a leather trousers.

Am I worng to compare the two?

I do not want to soak with sweat this summer and want to buy something resonably light, but with a good deal of protection.

I'd go for jeans because it's not always possible to change your gear when you go to a business meeting or to a customer, but on the other hand I want to make to the meetings in one piece. With the way people are driving these days it's more of a worry than it was before.

If you are changing anyway, why compromise your safety.

Leathers (or the textile bike gear) with proper armour is the only thing I would wear.

To be honest, I don't think any biker looks "cool" not wearing biker gear, they just look like the bike is borrowed or stolen :D

I had both in the past, I never had a set of leathers that were fully waterproof, I also found them more awkward to walk around ie at bike rallys than jeans, however I would prefere to have armoured leathers on in a spill compaired to anything else.

you see I'm not talking about "cool" thing, rather about practical one with safety in mind. All-weather gear I have now is too warm for summer and I want something lighter.
Crash reports on HoodJeans site are interesting, but jeans are still only jeans to me.

I thought someone would say 'oh, man, they *are* as good as the site says'. :)

You can get textile trousers and jackets that let plenty of air in. I got myself jacket and pants last year that have zips that when open let air in through mesh. They are fully armoured etc.
Have a look around the bike shops. What I wanted was Dainese Zentex Jacket and Drake Air trousers. But found em impossible to get and a certain shop which will remain nameless wasnt interested in getting them in for me. So I ended up with BMW Boulder jacket and City trousers... and am totally happy....

If you buy them from Lidl, you can wear a couple of pairs over each other and there not bad.

I have a pair of Draggin kevlar lined jeans and I wear them for short journeys. They are great now in the good weather. They have removable knee pads but that it is impact wise. I know that if I come off I will take a knock but the kevlar *should* sort out any road rash.

The guy that trained me for direct access had a pair of Giali jeans, they have some padding built in and look OK. He came off at about 130. His gloves and lid were destroyed and the denim on the jeans was gone but the kevlar did the job.

I know they are not as good as leathers or even decent textile gear, but they are so handy.

I'm wearing a pair of hood jeans right now. Their the business, I just take out the hip armour when I arrive in the office and it's all good.

Do you have knee armour in at all times?

Not all the time no, but it's more awkward to take out then the hip armour so I leave it in if I'm feeling lazy, which is quite often to be honest.

I'm largely desk bound at work so having it in doesn't make much differance anyway.

i use shoshoni jeans. they are not Kevlar but are double ply thick denim with armor in the hips and knees. they give me a semi confidence when riding. i also got a pair of Ricca leather/textile pant 2 weeks ago.stay cool as well . very impressed with them. but for a spirited ride out it has to be proper race leather. not that it maters. if ya hit a curb at 70mph your up **** creek anyway.

I use draggin jeans combat pants for short hops like 3 miles into town. They also have the knee armour but I wouldn't wear them for any longer journey as I dont feel as confident in them as my textile pants.

This week I've seen two different fellow bikers with shorts and a t-shirts on... no leather/textile/jeans/armour in sight... Both of them were on the N11 going into town from sandyford... feckin' muppets.
