4x4 for €11,000 (Toyota Surf?)

    Hi,

I've just sold my car and I'm looking to buy a 4x4, I have my eye on a 96 to 98 Toyota Hilux Surf. I've seen the Top Gear programme and I'm well aware of their reputation. I'm a little hesitant to pay so much for a 9 to 11 year old car. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on this.

The other option is to go commercial and buy a 99 to 01 Landcruiser or Pajero. I can also afford an even newer Freelander or Santa Fe, but am inclined to pass on them. My budget is €11,000 to €11,500.

    B.

What about a Grand Vitara? Probably one of the easiest 4x4's to tax (2.0 TD), and lots of them available.

A brand new Isuzu single cab pickup is only about 20k. A mate bought an 04 single cab L200 recently for 11k. It only has 45k up, and is like new.

My man is looking €6,500 for a 1996 Surf SSR-G.

It's a tad pricey, I think I may look at Defenders too.

    Are you kidding me!

If you can up your price, Exelsior in Galway have a Hilux double cab for about 15k. I think it's a '03.

You can also get a '05 Vitara for about 15k.

Picking up a '99 Freelander tonight for the girlfriend. 1.8 petrol.

The name of the website would put me off. Also the state of their yard.

Don't mind the state of the yard. The lack of a fancy showroom means they don't have to add the cost of building it to your car.

I appreciate the suggestion. Thanks for your help.

In terms of Mitsubishi, I hope to get a look at two Pajero SWBs tonight. I won't be looking at Pajero Sports due to reliability. The L200 is essentially the same beast underneath and also would be giddy on the back end with no load in it.

A friend used to work with Friends First and he has me well warned off HPI repos too.

The state of the other cars in the yard is a factor too.
