new Dell Desktop (graphics card)

    Hi there,

I'm a novice hoping to purchase a Dell PC over the comming weeks. Will be used for photos, video and games. I notice that there is no upgrade option on the graphics card (256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro) for any of the Dimension models lower than the Dimension 9200 (which has the option of a Geforce 7900GS). Does this mean that the lower models aren't suitable for a graphics card update, say, due to power constraints?

Even if I was to opt for the 9200, the Geforce 7900GS upgrade is almost an extra 200 cuid. Would the difference be noticeable?

Also, would the Sound Blaster® X-Fi Xtreme card offer much of an improvement over the Integrated Audio with Dolby Digital 7.1

If anyone has any other Desktop recommendations with potent graphics in the sub e1200 I'd be glad to hear.

    Thanks

    Rob

    Go on to www.komplett.ie

They sell pre built systems starting at around €900(excluding monitor) Which are pretty good!

The models below the 9200 shoudl easilly handle a 7900gs, and for the extra 200 quid you will notice a huge performance leap in gaming. The x1300 is a low end card, and will not be able to handle new games at medium or above quality.

The psu in all of the dimensions is 400w/500w(9200) so that is mroe then adequate for a 7900gs.

Just to give you a example, if you are to buy the card seperatly, you can pick up a x1300pro for 70-100€ and the 7900gs for 150-210€

Or you can go down the route of buying from www.komplett.ie www.overclockers.co.uk www.scan.co.uk www.vadim.co.uk and a few others.

Or the third possibility is to build your own pc, or if you dont know how, have a friend do it for you. It can be done in under a hour and will save you a good bit of money. Aslong as you already have a os. Otherwise add on a extra ontop of the build for a copy of xp home.

I would just sell the X1300Pro straight away and invest in something else on adverts.ie with the cash and a bit of your own, I would definitely not pay 200 extra on top of the base price for the 7900GS, although depending on what you're playing the X1300Pro isn't terribly bad at recent-ish games. Good review here, as you can see no problem belting out Half Life 2 and Battlefield 2 at high settings at high fps.

At the moment on adverts.ie, there's a 6800GT going for 85, and an X700Pro going for 25, both of which are better then the X1300Pro. Buying second hand while you don't get a warranty you do get some fantastic deals.

As for the X-Fi, well, I myself went from onboard HD 7.1 onboard to an X-fi and some new speakers recently , while it helps in games it doesn't make much of a difference in my honest opinion in terms of just sound.

Also I'm pretty sure that the psu is 375w not 400 or remotely near 500w but they are good reliable psus with strong rails so you would easily get by with a fairly good card in there. From reading around on other forums people seem to have managed 8800GTS cards without any problems.

Just a quick note that Dell Outlet is still my number one spot for picking up a bargain, although Laptops still seem to be the better bargains... Just picked up the following:

    XPS M1710 Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.0 Ghz)
    80 Gb Hard Drive (5,400RPM)
    8x DVD+/- RW
    2048Mb 667 Mhz RAM
    NVidia 256Mb GEForce GO 7900GS
    17.0 inch WUXGA with TrueLife
9 cell 80WHr battery (2-3 hours average life)
    XP SP2 Home
Was delivered in under 4 days (last Friday)

Picked this up for 550 Euro (Including VAT and Delivery - don't know if they forgot to put the 1 in front of this price!)

.......... said it was a scratched or dented system........only one tiny scratch about 2mm long on the front which I had to search to find.........you can't be in a hurry for this but if you keep an eye on this site, you will pick up a system worth the wait......... can't see this exact match on Dell's main website but the same one with the T7400 (2.16 Mhz) processor and with Vista (instead of my one which only has XP Home) is coming in at 1966 Euro!!
Reviews on this put it up there with a lot of the desktop gaming machines, so will not let you down...... (and I have absolutely zip to do with Dell, just glad that I caught them for a buck or two!!)
