Virginia University Shooting

    I am appalled at the tragic events than have transpired in Virginia today. My heart goes out to all those involved.

    I believe the further expression of sympathy and abhorrence is best left to those who have connections to students or faculty or those more articulate than myself.

    The one area I wish to discuss is about our sport. Within minutes of an incident like this a backlash is already under way. And like it or not, it will have an affect on all those who have an interest in Airsoft eventually. I would appreciate knowing where our representative organisation stands on this. And with our own politicians starting to knock on our doors looking for votes now is the time to have some questions ready. If we are not given some intelligent comments to make then someone is going to put their foot in their mouth and start eating, eventually stopping at their thigh. I want to hear from the committee of IAA

    Why not just talk about the tragedy instead? I'm sorry but I really disagree with moral of this thread. What happened in Virginia is really sad, I've been discussing it since I've heard about it, but there is no need to start associating that event with airsoft. In other words, the event won't have an effect on the sport of airsoft unless you want it to.

    You mentioned a backlash is already under way, could I ask where and what form this backlash is taking? I just haven't heard anything.

    I'm not sure we should be questioning politicians about the sport, making it illegal, etc., in the run up to the election. We're not organised enough yet for one thing, so it still won't appear as though we're a structured sport (and we'll keep looking like a loada cowboys). But other than that, politicians will probably fob us off with some sort of vague statement. They're not interested in this because it has a tiny following, whereas the save the children brigade is a huge one. But they've also got more important issues to tackle to be honest; I'm sure they can't afford to devote much time to understanding the sport, and if we start briefing them as they're standing on our doorsteps, then they'll walk away with vague understandings at best, but still no real reason to do anything about it. Except perhaps start working on their language for when a child is injured by one of these!

    "crazy gun freaks.... no no no, gun-crazed maniacs -- yeah, that's that one :cool:"

    But I'm glad you started this thread, because we do need an update on what's the story with relation to (i) joinin the federation of Irish sport, (ii) a press release, (iii) membership form, for example.

    A few months ago I was told ye were "way ahead of me" when I mentioned how it seems relatively easy to join the Federation of Irish sport -- have ye had much luck with contacting them?

    Is there anything I can be doing especially with the site? I want to add a membership section, but I'm still not sure what's going on with that. Should I just put that we're taking on provisional members (just like in the stickied thread), and take their name, age, and email address?

    Cheers folks

    I guess I agree (unless the OP can show me the backlash happening!), but none the less I think we need an update on the progress of the IAA, so perhaps the thread subject can be changed to "IAA Updates?" or somethin. I haven't seen NOIP or Hivemind around here for a while, and they're doing alot of the work. Probably too busy to keep us up to date ;)

    I don't see any relevance this has to airsoft. It's an American firearm issue. We play a sport. I'm sure the only thing in the world at the moment connecting these two things is this thread.

    If you want to discuss the tragedy, there is a thread about it in after hours here;

    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055079590

    If you want an update on what the IAA is up to at the moment, start a thread about that.
