Tony McCoy. Ruby's a great horseman but McCoy in a finish is just something else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭HiCloy

There are some strange names in that poll: Condon and Scudamore included, Mick Fitz and Conor O 'Dwyer not

    I've voted for McCoy regardless!

mccoy, ruby is a gr8 rider and id be just as happy to have him on my horse, but mccoy is a jockey where wenever he wins it seems to be a special ride!:D

Ruby 100%, he rides his horses amazingly. Not as strong as McCoy in the finish but his style i think is brilliant. The Grand National you need luck and skill to win and Ruby has won it twice already whereas as we all know A P has never won it.

Walsh & Mc Coy in a different league to the rest imo,Walsh coming out on top based on all round ability for me.

ruby walsh - withouut a shadow of a doubt!

Not very original, but Tony McCoy by a mile. I don't know how he does it, but he can get the most out of a horse, and almost picks them up and makes them cross that finish line. I've seen him ride average horses and make them look like champions.

McCoy is nearly unstopable in a finish! However my vote is goin to Tom Scudamore really been impressed by him this season. Can see why David Pipe has signed him up as stable jockey!!

Has to be the Carberry lad, flawed genius but no finer horseman in the saddle

The Scudamore (Snr) and Pipe (Snr) team were excellent, so it would be nice to see boths sons replicate that success.

Are McCoy and Walsh selected as the best jockey because they get the most winners...?

The best jockey's aren't necessarily the one's with the most winners.

McCoy and Walsh ride for very powerful stables which produce alot of winners for them.

Sam Thomas, Sam Jones, Jamie Moore and Graham Lee are excellent jockeys for the rides they get.

yes, but the reason they get the best rides is because they are the best jockeys...they didn't start out at the top.

just about to post something very similar goodfela.

In terms of up and coming jockeys I don't think anyone could be failed to be impressed by Tom O'Brien this year.

How I'd rate them (the ones listed above only)

    Best:Walsh
    Mc Coy
    Carberry
    Johnson
    Geraghty
    Madden
    Lee
    Scudamore
    Condon
    Worst:Casey

He's not listed above but the worst jockey currently riding is andrew leigh. An up and coming claimer who i like is Philip Enright. Possibly still a bit weak but plenty of time to improve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

Yeah, Philly Enright is gonna be good and Tom O'Brien has serious potential as the Colonel has pointed out.

Roger Loughran is the one jockey that always seems to fcuk up whenever I back the horses he rides. Hence my disliking of him.

 Forgot Chocolate Thornton and Mick Fitzgerald

I agree. McCoy is a legend. He rode everyone into the ground at some poxy meeting a few weeks back. Impressive stuff.

absolutely nothing positive I can say about the man. Has never impressed me and his ride on macs joy at the weekend (I know it was a flat race) was as bad as I've seen in a long time. Didn't back it so not pocket talk

What about his rides on Gemini Lucy? Geraghty taken off as horse was losing confidence in jumping. Leigh put up and while she throws in a few dodgy jumps along the way, they have an excellent understanding of each other. I'm not sure I would slate him for his ride of Macs Joy. You need to know what the instructions were, as winning and losing that race was of little relevance to his main target of Punchestown.

she has won 4 chases this yr . she beat minotaur, kit carson, mounthenry in novices chases and won a handicap at fairyhouse when running off only 132 (including claim) and beat exposed horses and accordian etoile who was returning after a year off. My point is that I'd have won most of these races on gemini as it was never necessary to get into a prolongued battle. any jockey would have won these races on her.

Surprised no one's asked where timmy murphy was, glad also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 559 ✭✭✭knighted

ad leigh-think u might be a bit hard on him -look at his stats for last year very consistant and regularly has to play second or third fiddle -his father is a great horseman look at moscow flyer and im sure he is mentoring him -lukie victor and hide the evidence two other good ones he rode -i think he is up and coming but it is a matter of opinion

I'm lucky enough to know the owners of Gemini and I can guarantee you "any jockey" would not have won as many races on her. She is quite difficult and Andrew uses the kid glove treatment. She tears off at a helter skelter pace and tends to wing her fences. Leigh doesn't mess her around, trying to organise her at her fences like Geraghty does. Instead he instills confidence in her by using his hands and lets her get on with it. That takes a fair bit of horsemanship but would not be obvious unless you knew the horse. So I can see where you come from with the form, but given her attitude, I think he has done very well on her. Consider that her forms figures could have read FF65UF at this stage!!

    ruby was just sensational today!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭mickc

he did and he's got a good chance on his mounts today

33-1 on pp for Ruby to win his 4 races
will probably do trebles from 4 and doubles also to low stakes

will definetly be backing ange de villez in a single too.

like Ruby himself said after winning the gold cup this year every1 has an opinion.

I think of 2 things if I analyze a jockey. AP is an out and out jockey, Ive ridden out at home with the the guy and he is no horseman. he wins on horses that he really shouldnt win on cause he is strong and a bully. but respect all the same.

Walsh kids horses along, plays games with them so that they enjoy themselves. brilliant to present a horse at a fence and in a finish I think he is the equal of mccoy. overall he is on another planet from AP.

paul carberry is an artist in the saddle, balance, brain, strength, he has got it all and timmy murphy is in the same mould, I love to watch them both.

richard johnston is a hugely underated jockey. how many times would he have been champ but for one AP? Choc is another great man, esp on the big day.

I guess I could keep going but the question was who is the best, I think we are in a golden era of jockeys but it is Ruby Walsh by a street for me

nice analysis- who in your opinion is the best horseman riding in ireland at the moment ? (not best jock )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Morgans

Conor O'Dwyer is a horseman of the highest calibre.

Ruby best about at the moment.

McCoy the best rider of bad horses ever.

    Carberry and Murphy in behind.

Casey isnt nearly as bad as someone mentioned earlier IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 peveril13

    thanks for the compliment knighted.
so if we are talking bout pure horseman I would rate Ruby on another planet from most others.
I love to see guys pop their legs out of the irons going to the start or in a parade to help settle a horse, simple thing but hugely effective.
TJ Murphy and Paul Carberry are incedible to watch, esp with a bastard or a dog under them. horses run for them so manybe dont find as much as you might think looking at them, oppositte of APMcCoy who sometimes horses dont run so much but keep finding more.
watching punchestown now and I have to mention Dave Russell, used to ride ponies with him years ago, dont really know him so well now. he must have worked very hard cause he has improved beyond recognition. gave monsonhy a great ride there today, I bet the horse hardly knew he ws in a race. big lad so not the most stylish but brilliant to get a horse over a fence.

horsemen in order for me, Ruby, TJ, Paul Carberry, Mick Fitz, Choc

Condon took an awful fall in the 3:30 there today, so did Graham Lee in the last on aces four, why did he give the horse a slap so close to the fence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 559 ✭✭✭knighted

horse was trying to measure it himslf i think -common mistake -felt sorry for the boys who took falls today no give in the ground at all just a thud -they earned thier money today

anyway i think i was the only one who voted for graham lee in the poll -he is a jock i follow -not financially -cause i think he can get a lot out of a horse and understands his job well -learned the jockey side of things when he lived with ap or so the story goes -

You're damned if you do &...........,he did nothing wrong the horse just never took off.How many times have you heard jockeys being critisised for letting a horse fiddle into the last and not making its mind up for it.
