Target backing

Can anyone recommend an easily sourced backing for field targets ?
Shooting at 50 yards with a 35lb recurve bow.

I've tried hay bails - reasonable OK if tightly packed but otherwise the arrow can pass though damaging the fletching (or getting lost).

I've tried stacked cardboard (10 flattened cardboard boxes bound together) - again, OK, good resistance to over-penetration but very difficult to pull arrows out of afterwards.......

Dont know where you can get them but you can get small foam targets for a good price and they will last for long time. The target below is a 60 cm target and I think it costs about €40-€50

Thanks Dave - that looks perfect.

Anyone know where I can buy these ? Nearest I've seen are SuperButts on sale at Quicks but they are £87 before shipping !

    Try sales@archeryshop.ie

They are based in Wicklow and sell super butts.

What Toxof said, superbutts come in various transportable sizes (the 80cm one I have fits in the boot of my car) and are more weatherproof than the straw targets. Hell of a lot lighter to boot :)

In answer to your original question, I have found that heavy carpet (with the rubber / foam lining) hung loosely behind the target can greatly improve its stopping power - however, if you have to resort to this in order to stop the arrows coming from a 35lbs recurve, I'd say your target is more or less finished.

Thanks for the suggestion -I'll certainly give drop sales@archeryshop.ie an email as I'm regularly up that direction.

And the carpet idea sounds worth a go too, though, when I say "targets" I'm just talking about the paper front bit (hence no stopping power of their own).

Ah, all becomes clear.... probably the cheapest option is a sack tightly stuffed with strips of carpet, with maybe a phonebook at the back as a catch-all. If you're going to be shooting regularly though, I'd recommend getting your hands on a superbutt..

Price back from archeryshop.ie is €170....

I see though (God bless Google) that Flybow in Mayo do large target foam blanks "2450 x 600 x 100 cm, for building your own targets, silhouettes and 3D-animals" for €60.

Thats sounds like a solid option.
Also have layered foam target squares:

High-quality foam target for bows with medium tensile weights. Even for beginners the big target has enough surface to let the arrow fly even on longer distances.
    Dimensions: 800 X 800 X 102 mm
    Material: TF 220, TF 400, TF 600

    For €65

And a bag full of carpet strips will keep me going in the interim :D
